New Holland 250C–545D Series Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland 250C loader won't lift or move at all, complete hydraulic failure
Check the hydraulic pump section starting at page 579 and the hydraulic schematic on page 580 (part number 8-103). Remove the pump and inspect for worn gears or a scored housing. Test the loader control valve seals per page 580 (part 8-116); if the check valve plug is loose, torque it to 45-55 ft. lbs. as specified on page 614.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems Troubleshooting p. 742Loader drifts down slowly after it's raised and latched in position
Inspect the load-holding check valves in the lift cylinder for internal leakage. Remove the cylinder retaining bolts and reseat the cylinder on its locating dowels, then tighten the retaining bolts to 75-80 ft. lbs. as specified on page 605. Replace worn piston seals if drift continues after reassembly.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems Troubleshooting p. 742Engine overheats and shuts down under load, especially in hot weather
Check the engine troubleshooting procedures for overheating causes. Flush the radiator and verify coolant flow is not restricted by debris in the fins. Pull the water pump and check the shaft seal; if it needs replacement, use the Water Pump Seal Replacer FT.6209 listed on page 84 to reseat it correctly.
Manual Section: Engine Systems TroubleshootingSteering feels unresponsive, wanders, or the pump makes noise
Follow the steering troubleshooting procedures for pump cavitation or cylinder seal leaks. Verify steering wheel lock-to-lock travel matches the 3.7 turns specified on page 513; excess play points to worn cylinder piston seals. Check the reservoir fluid level and inspect the pump inlet line for air leaks causing cavitation noise.
Manual Section: Steering TroubleshootingDash warning lights flicker on and off intermittently with no clear pattern
Check the electrical system troubleshooting index starting for the relevant wiring circuit. Inspect the battery terminals and main harness connectors for corrosion, and test the rotor field winding resistance; it should read 3.2 ohms as specified on page 167. Clean and reseat any grounds showing resistance outside spec.
Manual Section: Electrical System TroubleshootingPTO won't engage or disengage properly under load
Check the PTO troubleshooting section on page 480 for engagement linkage or clutch pack wear. Verify PTO output speed reads 540 RPM at 1850 engine RPM as specified on page 481; a lower reading points to slipping clutch plates or low system pressure. Inspect the pressure regulating valve for sticking before replacing the clutch assembly.
Manual Section: Power Take-Off Troubleshooting p. 480Frequently Asked Questions
