A weeping wheel hub or a whining differential usually means the axle has to come apart, and this 64-page Manitou ASK 372, AS 372 KR repair manual PDF (OEM ID 647372EN) is the factory guide for that job on the planetary drive steer axle. Teardown and rebuild procedures form the core of the book, covering the wheel hub, pivot, cardan shaft, differential and brake group, and brake cylinders, with bevel gear adjustment and metallic oil seal handling broken out separately. Assembly drawings marked with driving torques and a special tools list close it out. When you rebuild the differential, set ring gear to pinion play at 0.2 to 0.3 mm, then refill the central section with about 50 kg (110 lb) of oil and each hub with about 5 kg (11 lb). Guess the backlash and you pay for a chewed crown wheel and a second teardown. Bookmarked and text searchable, the PDF is yours to keep for the life of that axle.

Manitou ASK 372, AS 372 KR Common Problems This Manual Covers

Manitou ASK 372 AS 372 KR axle brake cylinders showing reduced braking power in normal operation

Remove the ignition key with the engine off and keep it in your possession before working on the cylinders (page 60). Remove plugs pos.4 and 5 and spring pos.3, then measure dimension A through hole pos.4 with a caliper. Loosen nut pos.2 and screw nut pos.1 until piston depth reads 40.2 mm. Refit nut pos.2 and recheck A. Never back nut pos.1 out too far, or the machine will not brake.

Manual Section: Brake cylinder adjustment p. 60
Brake cylinder parking brake failing to release after cylinder installation and start-up on axle

Verify the machine is properly blocked and the parking brake is not mechanically neutralized, as page 52 requires. With no pressure in any connection, measure dimension C through hole pos.6. It must be 40.2 mm. If it is higher, parking brake release is not guaranteed. If it is lower, the service brake will not work properly. Do not use the machine until the brakes work properly.

Manual Section: Torques and Special Tools p. 52
Wheel hub planetary oil level below the edge of the hub plug hole

Rotate the hub until plug pos.2 sits on the axle middle line, and wear hand protection because page 21 warns the oil can be near 100°C (212°F). Remove the plug and check that oil reaches the edge of the hole. Top up only with the same oil type and never mix oils. On a full change, refill each hub with about 5 kg (11 lb).

Manual Section: Checking and changing oil in wheel hubs p. 21
Wheel bearing tightness out of adjustment at the 1000 work hour inspection

Adjust the wheel bearing tightness every 1000 work hours, as page 20 lists. Tighten the ring nut with special wrench OMCI No.3 until the hub turns under about 30 to 35 Nm (page 36). If the hub has to come off, hold it with a suitable lifting means because it weighs about 60 kg (page 25). Fit new wheel hub oil seals whenever you disassemble it.

Manual Section: Assemblies p. 36
Differential bevel ring gear and pinion backlash out of spec after reassembly

Install a magnetic comparator on one side of a ring gear tooth. Rock the ring gear both ways without turning the pinion. Play must be 0.2 to 0.3 mm. Paint several teeth to read the contact pattern described on page 34. For low bearing on the gear and high bearing on the pinion, move the pinion away and bring the ring gear closer. Work the ring nuts until both checks pass.

Manual Section: Bevel gear adjustment p. 34
Pivot axle bronze bushes worn thin, found during spindle and pivot pin reassembly

Measure the axle bronze bushes before refitting the spindle. New thickness is 6 mm, and page 38 says to change them once they reach 5 mm. Support the spindle with a suitable lifting means and keep it well balanced, because it weighs about 200 kg (440 lb) at this stage. Guide the axle shaft in without touching the oil seal lip.
