Hydrostatic drive work separates the shops that guess from the ones that measure, and this 553-page New Holland TC54, TC56, AL59 repair manual PDF (OEM ID 604.64.961.00) walks you through that circuit before covering the rest of the combine: engine overhaul, transmission, threshing drum, straw walkers, cleaning shoe, and cab climate control. Wiring diagrams fill a long stretch of the back of the book, tracing every harness from battery to cab for both electrical systems. Separate schematics map the TC and AL hydraulic circuits, so the drawing on your bench matches the machine in the yard. Set the variator drive pulley clearance to 16.5 mm when the sheaves come apart, and torque the injection pump fastening screws to 27 Nm on reassembly. A guessed torque figure can crack a housing mid-harvest. This bookmarked, keyword searchable PDF goes wherever the combine does; download it before the crop is ready.

New Holland TC54, TC56, AL59 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland TC56 self propel variator moves forward but will not respond in reverse

Test charge pressure first; it must hold 26 bar per the pump specifications on page 233 before you condemn the control valve. Check the forward and reverse solenoid wiring at the console for corroded pins. If charge pressure is good, verify both high pressure circuits reach the 420 bar relief setting.

Manual Section: Hydrostatic Transmission p. 233
Header lift intermittent or dead, platform raises only after wiggling the joystick

Pull the header lift relay and check for burned contacts before chasing wires. Trace the joystick circuit with the wiring diagram and clean every connector under the console. If the electrical side checks good, confirm the return filter by-pass valve holds its 1.14 bar calibration on page 261.

Manual Section: Electrical System
Threshing drum loses rpm and bogs down in heavy crop, variator belt slipping

Inspect the variator belt for glazing and measure its protrusion; replace it once it stands more than 3 mm proud of the pulley. Set belt distance X to 179 mm plus or minus 2.5 mm using the procedure on page 490, and keep at least 5 mm clearance between the variator links and pulleys.

Manual Section: Threshing System Troubleshooting p. 490
Hydraulic functions slow and weak once the oil warms up, unloader and auger drag

Check the reservoir oil level cold on level ground before anything else; low oil pulls air and foams the fluid. Drain and refill if the oil looks milky, then replace both hydraulic filters. Verify the high pressure filter by-pass valve calibration at 3.5 bar on page 261, and inspect suction lines for cracks.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems p. 254
Engine overheats after a long afternoon in the field, coolant pushing out the overflow bottle

Blow the chaff out of the radiator and rotary screen first; a packed core will overheat any combine by mid afternoon. Pressure test the radiator cap and replace it if it opens below 1.0 bar, the spec on page 40. Check fan belt tension and spin the fan bearing by hand for roughness.

Manual Section: Engine Fault Finding p. 40

Frequently Asked Questions

What refrigerant and quantity does the A/C system on the New Holland TC54, TC56 and AL59 use?

The A/C system uses R134a coolant. The required quantity for the system is 1850 grams. p. 327

What type of plug-in relays must be used in the New Holland TC54, TC56 and AL59 electrical system?

What is the cylinder head bolt tightening sequence on the New Holland TC54, TC56 and AL59 engine?

When refitting the cylinder head, the greased bolts must be tightened in sequence in stages: 55 Nm, then 95 Nm, and finally a further 90 degrees using a torque angle gauge. p. 41

What is the cold valve clearance on the New Holland TC54, TC56 and AL59 engine?

For a cold engine, the intake valve clearance should be between 0.36 and 0.46 mm, and the exhaust valve clearance should be between 0.43 and 0.53 mm. p. 27

What is the oil capacity of the 6-cylinder engine on the New Holland TC54, TC56 and AL59?
