New Holland 5640–8340 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland 7740 hydraulic lift slow and weak, code 1004 filter restriction warning on the dash

Check the transmission, hydraulic and rear axle oil level before condemning the pump, then replace both hydraulic oil filters at the 300 hour service starting on page 26. Smear clean oil on each new filter seal, screw up until the faces just meet, then tighten a further 3/4 of a turn per page 27. Do not overtighten.

Manual Section: 300-Hour Service p. 27
Transmission shifts harshly and clutch drags, pedal free play feels wrong after clutch work

Adjust the clutch interlock cable before pulling the transmission. On 12 x 12 transmissions, set cable movement to 0.24 to 0.31 in. (6 to 8 mm) as shown on page 44, then check the clutch control cable adjustment. If shifting stays harsh after adjustment, change the transmission filters and fluid before blaming the clutch packs.

Manual Section: Clutch Control and Interlock p. 44
Steering goes weak and erratic at low rpm, wheel gets hard to turn under load

Test the hydrostatic steering pump with a pressure gauge teed into the pump outlet. On two wheel drive 5640, 6640, 7740 and 7840 tractors, maximum pump pressure is 2100 psi, listed in the specifications on page 54. If the pump cannot reach spec at full throttle, inspect the steering cylinder for internal leakage before replacing the pump.

Manual Section: General Maintenance and Specifications p. 54
Engine won't crank unless the key connector is jiggled, dash power flickers intermittently

Check the ignition switch connector for loose pins and backed out terminals before replacing the switch; wiggle the harness with the key held at start. Clean and tighten the battery terminals at each 150 hour service, covered starting on page 18, and inspect the fuses and relays in the fuse box for corrosion.

Manual Section: Hour and 150-Hour Service p. 18
Brakes fade and pedal goes soft once the transmission oil warms up

Check the brake and clutch fluid reservoir level first and top up with the correct fluid before the next field run. Adjust the footbrakes and handbrake at each 300 hour service, following the procedures in the section starting on page 26, and bleed the system if the pedal firms up cold but fades hot.

Manual Section: 300-Hour Service p. 26
