You have the machine parked on firm ground, the bucket down and a side panel off. Maybe a cylinder is weeping at the rod, or the Yanmar cranks and won't catch. This is the New Holland service manual for the E35B SR and E39B SR,, publication 47574267B from March 2014.

It covers the 3TNV88-PYB engine, the variable displacement pump and main control valve, swing and travel, the undercarriage, the cab and the relay-based electrics. The control valves, hand and foot controls, swivel and boom cylinder get Problem/Possible Cause/Correction tables, which is how a shop tech actually thinks.

A mini excavator that won't run leaves a crew standing still while someone guesses at parts. Find the fault in the right section first. Then you walk up to the parts counter knowing which seal, O-ring, relief valve or pin to order.

New Holland E35B SR, E39B SR Common Problems This Manual Covers

Travel is weak and the machine crawls poorly

The Hydraulic Travel System section covers taking the travel motor apart and putting it back together, and lists the special tools for it: a working bench, retainers and a long lifting eye for the motor, spindle and hub. Before you pull the motor, trace the travel circuit on the hydraulic schematic and rule out the pump and main control valve, which have their own sections.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems - Travel System p. 611
Engine cranks but will not start

Start at the battery. A weak or discharged battery that gives low cranking speed is the common cause. Electrical Systems covers the battery electrolyte and charging checks, the alternator and the engine starting system. If cranking speed is good, run the compression pressure check in the Engine section.

Manual Section: Electrical Systems - Battery and Engine Starting System p. 77
Hydraulic functions are slow and underpowered

Operators call it poor power. The Problem/Possible Cause/Correction tables in Hydraulic Systems point to relief valve malfunction, often from dust caught between the poppet and seat. Clean and inspect the valve before you buy a new relief valve assembly, then recheck the function.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems - Main Control Valve and Relief Valves p. 515
Boom, arm or bucket drifts down, or oil weeps at a cylinder rod

Drift and rod leakage point to a worn U-ring, wiper ring or O-ring. Hydraulic Systems covers the boom, dipper, bucket and dozer cylinders. Replace the whole seal set while the cylinder is open, and check the pins and bushings at both ends before it goes back on.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems - Boom, Dipper, Bucket and Dozer Cylinders p. 717

Frequently Asked Questions

Does one manual cover both the E35B SR and the E39B SR?

Yes. Both machines share the Yanmar 3TNV88-PYB and one book, and specs are split out where they differ. An E35B SR cab machine weighs 3500 kg (7716 lb) in operating trim, and an E39B SR cab weighs 3900 kg (8598 lb). Dozer stroke differs too: 560/410 mm up/down on the E35B SR, 540/440 mm on the E39B SR. p. 25

Can I use it to pull and reinstall the engine?

The Engine section covers the 3TNV88-PYB crankcase, cylinder heads, fuel injection, cooling and lubrication. It gives the M10 engine mount bolt torque as 46.1 N-m (34.0 lb ft) with LOCTITE 262 applied. Don't skip the threadlocker on a machine that shakes all day. Rated output is 21.2 kW (28.8 Hp) at 2400 RPM if you're checking whether the engine is making its numbers. p. 103

Oil is leaking from the hydraulic swivel in the center of the machine. Is that covered?

Yes, under Hydraulic Systems along with the swing and travel systems. The troubleshooting table covers external leakage, internal leakage and a sticking shaft. The usual causes are a worn O-ring or thrust ring, or heavy wear on the sliding surfaces. Rule out the swivel before you condemn a travel motor. p. 684

Are the hydraulic and electrical schematics in the book?

Both are there: the hydraulic schematic in Hydraulic Systems and the electrical schematic in Electrical Systems. The book has no fault code list, so you chase a dead circuit with a meter, with the harness and connector pages and the schematic open next to you. p. 322

Does it help with track tension and undercarriage repairs?

Tracks and Track Suspension covers the track frame, driving wheels, tension units and rollers. On a machine this size working rocky ground, that is where the hours show first. Frames and Ballasting covers the upper frame, the swing ring assembly and the ballasts. Knowing how the tension unit comes apart saves a lot of prying. p. 803
