Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
This is the factory service manual for the New Holland Workmaster 35 and Workmaster 40 compact tractors, Tier 4B (final), part number 48144024. It works through the tractor system by system, and it treats the hydrostatic drive as its own section rather than folding it into the transmission, which is how you will actually work on it. The hydraulic and HST chapters give the pump capacity, the relief settings and the exact pressure differentials at which each filter and cooler bypass opens.

New Holland Workmaster 35, Workmaster 40 Common Problems This Manual Covers
The tractor is slow on hydraulics, or the lift will not raise a full load.
Measure against the two relief settings before you open anything. The pump should give 31.2 l/min at 2600 engine rpm, the system relief valve is set to 16671 kPa (2418 psi), and the safety relief valve above it to 19609 kPa (2844 psi). If flow is right and pressure is low, the system relief valve or a leaking spool is at fault. The lift also has its own adjustable drop rate valve and safety relief valve, worth checking before the cylinder.
Manual Section: Hydraulic SystemsThe hydrostatic drive feels weak, or it overheats in hot weather.
Check the bypass valves, since they quietly change how the system behaves. The oil cooler bypass fully opens at a 538 kPa (78 psi) differential and then no oil reaches the cooler at all, and the HST filter bypass fully opens at 276 kPa (40 psi) and then HST oil goes unfiltered. Cold thick oil or a clogged element opens both. Change the element, warm the oil and repeat the HST pressure test the drive section describes.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic DriveA fault code, a dead circuit, or a control that will not respond.
Read the code and work the fault-code tables, which give the conditions that set each code and a guided diagnostic naming what to measure and where. When the test points at a circuit, use the harness drawings and connector component diagrams and back-probe the pin they name. If the tractor is a ROPS machine, the schematic at the very back of the manual, drawing 48090750, is the one you want.

Which tractors does this manual cover?
The Workmaster 35 and the Workmaster 40 compact tractors, Tier 4B (final), under part number 48144024. They share the chassis, the axles, the hydrostatic drive, the hydraulics and the electrical system, so nearly every procedure applies to both.
What hydraulic pressures and flows should I see?
Pump capacity is 31.2 l/min (8.3 US gpm) at 2600 engine rpm. The system relief valve is set to 16671 kPa (2418 psi) and the safety relief valve to 19609 kPa (2844 psi). Test against those two figures before you condemn the pump, because a pump that makes flow but not pressure points at the relief valve rather than the gears.
When do the filter and cooler bypasses open?
The oil cooler bypass valve starts to open at a 414 kPa (60 psi) pressure differential and is fully open at 538 kPa (78 psi), at which point oil no longer passes through the cooler. The HST filter bypass starts to open at 207 kPa (30 psi) and is fully open at 276 kPa (40 psi), at which point HST oil is not being filtered at all. Both matter more than they look on a cold morning.
Is the hydrostatic drive covered separately?
Yes, at pages 419 to 526, separate from the gear transmission section. It covers the hydrostatic pump and motor, the charge and filter circuits, the ground drive control and linkage, and the HST pressure test and overhaul procedures.
How big is the manual and can I search it?
It is 1595 pages in English, a searchable and printable PDF, and it closes with the ROPS electrical schematic, drawing 48090750. Search the text, print the pages you need for the bench, and keep the rest on a laptop in the workshop.
