Versatile 9280–9880, 9282–9882 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine overheats
Air flow through the radiator is restricted, so clean dirt and debris from the radiator core, A/C condenser core, oil cooler core and the grill. The troubleshooting table in the Cooling System section also lists low coolant level, a faulty radiator cap and a loose or worn fan belt.
Manual Section: Cooling system troubleshooting p. 158PTO will not engage
If engine speed is above 1400, shut the PTO switch OFF, bring the engine below 1400 RPM and turn the PTO ON again. If it still won't engage, the Power Take-Off section points to a fault in the PTO electrical control circuit, a faulty solenoid valve or low clutch apply pressure. For low pressure, perform the clutch apply pressure test.
Manual Section: PTO troubleshooting p. 1349Sluggish steering on the 80 Series
Start with the reservoir, because low hydraulic oil is the first cause listed, and top it up. If the pump is worn, test pump capacity, cavitation and efficiency. If system pressure is low, test and adjust the relief valve as described in the Steering, 80 Series section.
Manual Section: Steering troubleshooting, 80 Series p. 2139Hi-Flo system does not operate or stops operating
Check the detent setting first and adjust it if it is too low. If low pressure stand-by is too high, set LPSB to 300 PSI. If high pressure stand-by is too low, set HPSB to 2900 PSI. If the pressures check out, suspect excessive pump wear and perform the implement pump isolation test from the Hydraulics, 82 Series and 80 Series With Hi-Flo section.
Manual Section: Hi-Flo hydraulic system troubleshooting p. 1881Frequently Asked Questions
Does this manual cover my Versatile 9280 to 9880 or 9282 to 9882 tractor?
Yes. This is the 80/82 Series Tractor Repair manual 40928040. It covers the 9280, 9480, 9680 and 9880 (80 Series) and the 9282, 9482, 9682 and 9882 (82 Series). The file has Sections 1 to 13. Hydraulics and steering each have two versions: one for the 80 Series without Hi-Flo, and one for the 82 Series and 80 Series tractors fitted with the Hi-Flo kit. All other sections cover both series. p. 1
What are the coolant, fuel, transmission, axle and hydraulic capacities of the Versatile 9280 to 9882?
Coolant on the 9280 / 9480 / 9680 / 9880 is 15 (57) / 15.3 (58) / 15.6 (59) / 15.9 (60) gal (liter). On the 9282 / 9482 / 9682 / 9882 it is 14.5 (55) / 15.3 (58) / 15.6 (59) / 15.9 (60). The fuel tanks hold 927 L (245 Gal. U.S.) in total. The transmission reservoir takes 37.9 liters (10 gallons). Axle oil is 48.1 liters total per axle on a 9280 QS and 50.9 liters on a 9880 QS heavy duty. The hydraulic reservoir holds 76 liters (20 US Gal). p. 157
What hydraulic, transmission and PTO pressures does the Versatile 80/82 Series manual give?
On the 80 Series without Hi-Flo, high pressure stand-by is 193-200 bar (2800-2900 PSI). On the 82 Series and 80 Series with Hi-Flo, relief valve pressure is 186 bar (2700 PSI) and detent kickout is factory set at 155 bar (2250 PSI). The transmission brake pressure test is 3 - 4 bar (43 - 60 psi). Transmission pump flow at 2100 RPM is 94 - 113 lpm (25 - 30 gpm). PTO clutch apply pressure is 14.5 - 17.3 bar (210 - 250 PSI) at the valve. p. 1621
Which Cummins engine and horsepower does each Versatile 80/82 Series model have?
On the 80 Series, the 9280 has the L10 and the 9480, 9680 and 9880 have the 14L. They make 250 / 300 / 350 / 400 BHP at 2100 rpm. Engine torque at rated speed is 625 (848) / 750 (1018) / 875 (1187) / 1000 (1357) ft lbs (N·m). On the 82 Series, the 9282 has the C8.3, the 9482 the M11, and the 9682 and 9882 the N14. They make 260 / 310 / 360 / 425 BHP at 2100 rpm. p. 65
Does the manual include wiring diagrams, hydraulic oil flow diagrams and troubleshooting charts?
Yes. Section 3 has electrical schematics for start and charge, monitor, PTO, powershift and other circuits, with wiring diagram keys and a wire index. There are hydraulic oil flow diagrams for the 80 Series, the 82 Series Hi-Flo priority valve circuit and the steering circuit. Nearly every section has problem, possible cause and correction tables. p. 289
