You're about to pull the dipstick, top off the hydraulic tank or tee a gauge into a pressure port on a 580M, 580SM, 580SM+ or 590SM Series 2. This is Case publication 6-74432, the 2004 loader backhoe service manual, revised July 2005.
When the machine is dead on a jobsite and there is nobody to call, you need the specs in front of you. Stall test check sheets, steering pressure checks and transmission troubleshooting tell you which system is at fault before you start pulling hoses.

Case 580M–590SM Series 2 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Machine will not move
Start with the oil level, then look for a broken universal joint or drive shaft. Check the fuse panel for power to the clutch solenoids. Next come the pressure and pump flow checks. The book lists a stuck or damaged cold oil by-pass valve, the pressure regulator or the pump as possible causes.

Put a gauge on the system and check the steering relief valve setting first. If the pressure is right, the book points you to the flow control valve spool, then the steering cylinder piston packing, and finally the hydraulic pump. Steering control valve service is in the same steering and front axle section.

The electrical troubleshooting table has you check the 10 ampere fuse at location 5 first. Next, check wire 1A between the starter terminal and the alternator, then wire 34 to the instrument cluster. If the alternator itself has to come out, removal is covered separately in Removal and Installation of Electrical Components.

Use the stall test check sheets to separate engine problems from hydraulic problems such as the main relief setting, and from torque converter or transmission problems. On a 580M, torque converter stall is 2135 to 2310 rpm naturally aspirated and 2215 to 2315 rpm turbo. Full throttle no load is 2320 to 2450 rpm.

Does this manual cover the 590SM, or only the 580 models?
It covers all four Series 2 machines: 580M, 580SM, 580SM+ and 590SM. Where the specs differ, the book lists each model separately. For example, usable fuel is 119 litres on the 580M and 580SM and 159 litres on the 580SM+ and 590SM. p. 16
How much hydraulic oil does my machine take?
Total system capacity is 106 litres (28 U.S. gallons) on the 580M and 119 litres (31.5 U.S. gallons) on the 580SM and 580SM+. The 590SM takes 130 litres (34.3 U.S. gallons). Add 5.7 litres (6 U.S. quarts) if the machine has an extendahoe. The crankcase takes 13.6 litres of 15W-40 API CH-4. p. 16
What should the main relief valve be set to?
The hydraulic specifications section for the 580M, 580SM and 580SM+ gives 210 ± 3 bar (3050 ± 50 psi). Check it before you blame the pump or a cylinder. A low main relief will also throw off your stall test readings. p. 1128
Can I rebuild the engine or time the injection pump with this book?
Yes. The bound-in Case engine manual covers overhaul, lubrication and cooling circuits, technical specifications and fuel system repair. In-vehicle injection pump removal and static timing are in the engine removal and tests section. Engine and radiator removal are covered there too. p. 74
Are wiring and hydraulic diagrams included?
There is a fold-out electrical schematic for the 580M, 580SM, 580SM+ and 590SM at the back of the book. The schematic set also includes the hydraulic schematic for the 590SM with pilot controls. Tracing a dead circuit is much easier with the wire numbers in front of you. p. 1708
