Case 721E Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 721E steering gets noisy and loses assist under load, wheel turns hard at idle
Check reservoir oil level first; the system holds 176.0 liters total, and low oil starves the steering circuit before anything else fails. Inspect steering cylinder rod seals and supply hoses for leaks, retorquing loose cylinder hoses to 60 Nm (44 pound feet). If assist stays weak, run the steering pressure checks starting page 139.
Manual Section: Steering p. 139Auxiliary steering pump flow below spec, motor drawing excessive amperage during test
Test auxiliary steering output with a flowmeter. If flow measures below 24.6 L/min or motor current exceeds 315 A, remove the auxiliary steering motor and pump for bench testing. Follow the removal procedure in the Steering section beginning on page 139, and inspect the pump drive coupling for wear before condemning the motor.
Manual Section: Steering p. 139Hydraulic oil temperature warning, codes 1312 or 1313 during normal loader work
Verify oil level in the reservoir; total hydraulic capacity is 176.0 liters and running low overheats the circuit fast. Clean debris from the cooler fins and confirm the fan drive engages at temperature. Look up codes 1312 and 1313 in the error code reference, then check for internal leakage loading the pump.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 434Loader bucket lifts slowly and loses power under load, cycle times getting worse
Check pump differential pressure and loader pump cutoff settings using the pressure check procedures in the Hydraulics section starting page 434. Replace clogged filter elements, torquing the filter head screws to 25 Nm (221 pound inches). If pressures test low after adjustment, flowmeter-test the main pump for internal wear before pulling cylinders.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 434Hydraulic hoses seeping at steering valve connections, oil film on frame after work
Clean the fittings and identify the leak source before wrenching on anything. Torque the PVFC steering valve mounting nuts to 110 Nm, the PVG32 mounting screws to 30 Nm (22 pound feet), and the LS lines to 14 Nm (10 pound feet), all listed on pages 433 and 435. Replace O-rings that have taken a set instead of overtightening.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 433Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for Grade 8 bolts on the Case 721E?
For Grade 8 bolts, nuts, and studs, the torque specifications vary by size. For example, a 1/2 inch bolt requires 110 to 132 pound-feet (149 to 179 Newton metres), while a 1.0 inch bolt requires 900 to 1080 pound-feet (1220 to 1465 Newton metres). p. 8
What is the engine oil capacity for the Case 721E?
The engine oil capacity for the Case 721E, including the filter change, is 14.2 liters (15 U.S. quarts). p. 14
What does error code 3278 mean on a Case 721E?
Error code 3278 indicates a supply voltage CJ940 upper limit fault. This is caused by excessive voltage supply of a CJ940 component, such as high battery voltage, defective wiring, or an internal defect of the EDC. You should check the battery for correct voltage supply and check the wiring. p. 15
How do I perform a stall test on the Case 721E?
To perform a stall test, you must first heat the oil to operating temperature (82° to 104°C for torque converter oil). Then, with the engine at full throttle, work against the torque converter and/or hydraulic system. The stall speed for the torque converter and hydraulic system together should be 1600 to 1900 rpm. p. 49
What is the procedure for bleeding the brake system on the Case 721E?
After charging the accumulators, pump the brake pedal 20 times to discharge the system. Open all four wheel end bleed screws, start the engine at low idle, and depress the brake pedal until oil flows clear without bubbles. Close the bleed screws and repeat the process for each axle. p. 25
