Case 845B, 865B, 885B VHP Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 845B grader transmission slips under load and needs frequent oil top-offs between services
Check the transmission oil level with the engine idling and the machine parked on level ground. Follow the maintenance chart on page 116 for transmission oil and filter changes; FUNK units also need the transmission screen cleaned. Service a new machine early, after the first 100 hours, then stay on the chart intervals.
Manual Section: Lubrication / Filters / Fluids p. 116Blade and steering hydraulics feel slow and weak, hydraulic filter warning light stays on
Verify the hydraulic tank oil level first, then check the hydraulic filter warning light on the console. Replace a restricted filter using the service procedures starting on page 129, and torque the filter capscrews to 47.5 to 54.2 Nm. If the oil looks contaminated, change the hydraulic fluid per the maintenance chart.
Manual Section: Lubrication / Filters / Fluids p. 129Engine coolant temperature gauge climbs into the red zone during heavy grading
Stop grading and let the engine idle down to cool before shutdown. Check the coolant level once the system has cooled; total cooling system capacity is 32.0 liters, listed on page 132. Inspect the radiator core for packed dirt and clean it out, and check fan belt tension and condition.
Manual Section: Lubrication / Filters / Fluids p. 132Red engine oil pressure warning light flickers at low idle after an oil change
Shut the engine down immediately and check the oil level on the dipstick before restarting. Refill capacity with a filter change is 16.0 liters, shown on page 128, so verify the correct amount actually went in at the last service. If the level is right and the light stays on, do not run the engine; contact your dealer.
Manual Section: Lubrication / Filters / Fluids p. 128Front end shakes and wheels wobble at transport speed on the road
Torque the wheel lug nuts to 625 Nm as specified on page 109. Check tire inflation pressures and tread direction against the wheels and tires section starting on page 107, and inspect rims for damage. Recheck lug nut torque after any wheel has been removed and again after the first hours of operation.
Manual Section: Wheels and Tires p. 109Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the wheel lug nuts on the CASE 845B and 865B models?
The wheel lug nuts for the 845B and 865B models should be periodically checked for tightness and torqued to 625 Nm (63.7 kgf.m; 460 lb.ft) following the specified tightening sequence. p. 109
What is the replacement interval for the transmission oil filter on the CASE 845B, 865B, and 885B models with ZF transmission?
The transmission oil filter for these models must be replaced after the first 100 hours of operation, and then every 500 hours thereafter. p. 142
What is the replacement interval for the hydraulic system oil filter?
The hydraulic system oil filter should be replaced every 2000 hours of operation, or sooner if the Hydraulic Filter Warning Lamp illuminates. p. 139
What is the valve clearance specification for the engine when cold?
When the engine is cold (coolant temperature below 140°F or 60°C), the intake valve clearance should be 0.20 – 0.30 mm (0.008 – 0.012 in) and the exhaust valve clearance should be 0.46 – 0.56 mm (0.018 – 0.022 in). p. 138
What is the torque specification for the ROPS mounting bolts?
The tightening torque for the 20 ROPS mounting capscrews is 587 Nm (60 kgf.m; 435 lb.ft). p. 94
