This is the factory service manual, 8-17012, for the Case 850E and 855E crawler dozers, and unlike some Case volumes this one is complete - the full Engine and Fuel System sections are bound in alongside the chassis work. So you get cylinder head, crankshaft and timing procedures, injection pump and injector service, track and undercarriage wear limits, torque converter and steering clutch overhaul, brake band adjustment, and the whole hydraulic circuit with pressure testing. These are mechanical machines with no ECU, so diagnosis is done the honest way - a pressure gauge, a flow meter and a tape measure - and the manual gives you the actual numbers to test against, like the 2150 to 2300 psi dozer main relief setting. Written for the person doing the work.

Case 850E, 855E Common Problems This Manual Covers

Blade lifts slowly and the hydraulics fade once the oil warms up

Run the pump test in the Hydraulics section: oil at 130 to 150 F, engine at 2200 rpm, flow measured against the 2000 psi test pressure. Below 75 percent pump efficiency the pump is due for overhaul. While the gauge is plumbed in, confirm the dozer main relief holds 2150 to 2300 psi - not the loader figure on the same page.

Manual Section: Hydraulics - Pressure Testing and Adjustment p. 744
Machine creeps, pulls to one side, or a steering lever has no effect

Start cheap: the Brakes section covers band adjustment and linkage, and a dragging band mimics clutch trouble. If the adjustment does not fix it, the Power Train section walks through steering clutch removal, inspection and rebuild, and covers the bevel gear and final drives while you are in there.

Manual Section: Power Train - Transmission and Steering Clutches / Brakes - Adjustment Procedures p. 574
Throwing tracks or chewing through undercarriage parts

Set sag to the specified 1.5 to 2 inches (38 to 51 mm) using the track adjuster procedure - too tight wears everything, too loose throws chains. Then measure chain pitch, rollers, idler and sprocket against the wear limit tables in the Track and Undercarriage section and replace as a matched set where it calls for it.

Manual Section: Track and Undercarriage - Track Adjuster and Wear Limits p. 390
Hard starting, white smoke, or rough running after fuel system work

Work through the Fuel System section in order: drain the water separator, check the transfer pump, bleed air using the published sequence, then verify injection pump timing. Injector and nozzle testing is covered too, so you can isolate one bad nozzle instead of pulling the pump on a hunch.

Manual Section: Fuel System - Air Bleeding and Timing p. 318

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual include the engine, or do I need a separate engine book?

It is all in this one. Cylinder head, pistons and connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, timing, lubrication and cooling circuits, turbocharger, and full engine removal and refitting. The fuel system is covered too - injection pump, injectors and nozzles, transfer pump, filters and water separator. No second manual required. p. 18

The hydraulic spec page lists three different relief pressures. Which one applies to my machine?

The manual prints dozer, loader and backhoe settings in side-by-side columns, and you must read the right one. On a straight dozer the main relief is 2150 to 2300 psi at 2000 rpm. The loader column reads 2450 to 2600 psi - set a dozer to that figure and you are over-pressurising the pump, hoses and cylinders. Check the column heading before you touch the adjuster. p. 744

My machine pulls to one side and one steering lever barely works. Is that covered?

Yes, from cheap to expensive. The Brakes section gives the band adjustment procedure - a dragging or slack band imitates clutch failure and costs nothing to fix. If adjustment does not cure it, the Power Train section takes you through steering clutch inspection and rebuild, plus the bevel gear and final drives behind them. p. 574

The engine dies or runs rough after a fuel filter change. Does the manual cover bleeding?

Yes. The Fuel System section gives the air bleeding procedure step by step, along with water separator service, fuel transfer pump checks and injection pump timing. Most post-filter-change complaints on these engines are trapped air or a loose fitting, and the bleeding sequence sorts them without guesswork. p. 488

How tight should the tracks be, and how do I know when the undercarriage is worn out?

Recommended track sag is 1.5 to 2 inches (38 to 51 mm). The Track and Undercarriage section shows where to measure it and how to set it with the track adjuster, then gives wear limits for the chain, rollers, carrier rollers, idler and sprocket so you can measure and decide instead of guessing whether it will last another season. p. 336
