Wrenching on a prewar Case? This J. I. Case LA, VA, CC, DC, DC3, DC4, DH, DO, DV, RC, SC, SO, VO shop manual PDF packs 122 pages of factory procedures for the 1937-1942 tractor line, including the VAO, VAH, VAC, and DCS variants. You get full engine teardown coverage: crankshaft and main bearings, cylinder sleeves, valve timing by punch marks, plus exploded views throughout. Transmission, final drive, brakes, steering gear, governor, ignition timing, and the hydraulic lift system each get step-by-step overhaul procedures. Torque the hydraulic pump head cap screws to 35 foot pounds, fill the lift system with 8 quarts, and check relief pressure at 980-1130 psi on the D, LA, and S series. These tractors outlived their paper manuals decades ago. Bookmarked and keyword-searchable, this PDF opens on any device; pull it up on your phone in the shop and start the rebuild tonight.

J. I. Case Letter Series LA-VO Common Problems This Manual Covers

J. I. Case LA hydraulic lift won't raise implement, pump running but arms creep back down

Check relief valve pressure with a gauge teed into the pump outlet line. On D, LA and S series the valve should unload between 980 and 1130 psi, the spec on page 102. If pressure comes up short, inspect the pump valves and intake screen for trash before condemning the pump itself.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift Systems p. 102
Lift arms slow and jerky after reservoir service, pump sounds like it is sucking air

Drain the reservoir and refill with clean fluid to the 8 quart original fill capacity for VA series shown on page 113. Cycle the lift several times to purge trapped air. Then test relief valve unloading on the VA; it should fall between 4350 and 4500 psi per page 108. Renew the valve if it unloads early.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift Systems p. 113
Brake pedal goes nearly to the floor, tractor pulls hard to one side when stopping

Adjust the linkage: on LA models, loosen the piston push rod lock nuts and rotate the rod until the pedal shows 1/2 inch free travel measured at the foot pad, the spec on page 87, before the rod contacts the piston. Set both sides evenly, then road test; equal pedal height and straight stops confirm the adjustment.

Manual Section: Brakes p. 87
Transmission shifts hard in freezing weather, gear oil thick and levers barely move

Drain the transmission and differential compartments while the oil is still warm — they are separate compartments on these tractors, and the Service Data table on page 5 gives the refill quantity for 'Trans. & Diff.' along with the torque tube and final drives. Refill each to its listed capacity, then check the level again after the first hour of work. For the hydraulic lift system the manual is explicit about grade (page 113): SAE 20 above 60°F, SAE 10 between 32 and 60°F, and SAE 5W below 32°F.

Manual Section: Transmission p. 5
Hydraulic pump loses prime after valve service, fluid seeping past the pump head at pressure

Remove the pump valve head and inspect the outlet valve ball, spring and guide for wear or trash holding the ball off its seat. Reinstall the parts in order, then torque the head retaining cap screws to 35 foot pounds as listed on page 106. Retest the lift under load before returning the tractor to work.
