Doosan DX15, DX18 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Doosan DX15 engine cranks slowly or won't start, battery goes dead after sitting overnight

Check battery terminals and the ground strap before condemning the starter. Test the charging side next: page 247 calls the no-load reading normal when it holds steady at about 15.0 V with alternator speed at 5000 rpm or more, and gives the regulator continuity checks on the same page. If the starter still drags, bench test it — page 234 measures pinion gap against a 0.5 to 2.0 mm standard.

Manual Section: Engine and Drive Train p. 247
Bucket and boom move slow and jerky, hydraulics get weak once the oil warms up

Check hydraulic oil level first; a low reservoir pulls air into the pump and makes it growl. Verify system pressure with a gauge against the 210 kg/cm2 (3,000 psi) main relief spec on page 58. If pressure won't build, inspect the suction line for collapse and replace clogged filters before blaming the pump.

Manual Section: Main Pump Troubleshooting p. 58
Hydraulic oil weeping at hose fittings and split flange connections on the boom

Clean the fitting and confirm the leak path before reaching for a wrench; overtightening a split flange pinches the O-ring and makes it worse. Replace the O-ring, then tighten evenly in a cross pattern to the torque table for the fastener you are actually working on — page 94 is the hose-clamp chart, and the standard torque tables sit in the General Maintenance section, pages 63 to 100.

Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 94
Tracks loose, jumping sprocket teeth, or grinding noise from the undercarriage when turning

Check track tension first and adjust it at the grease fitting; a slack track walks off the idler on side slopes. Then measure the undercarriage against the wear tables in the Lower Structure section: page 114 gives track frame limits, page 115 the idler, page 116 the track roller, and page 118 the sprocket — tooth width 22.0 mm new, 16.0 mm rebuild-or-replace limit. Replace anything past its limit and check the sprocket bolts.

Manual Section: Lower Structure and Chassis p. 114
Machine loses travel power on one side, travel motor whines or ratchets under load

Drain the travel motor gearbox and inspect the oil for metal particles; glitter means internal wear, not just old oil. Refill with what page 335 specifies — SAE 30-CD diesel engine oil or an equivalent gear oil, drained completely and not mixed. Test the travel circuit with a gauge; if pressure won't reach relief, suspect internal motor leakage. Torque the motor mounting bolts to the table on page 334 on reassembly.

Manual Section: Travel Motor Troubleshooting p. 335

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the replacement specifications for the battery and cables?

For 24-volt battery units consisting of two series-connected 12-volt batteries, booster or charger cable connections must be made between the non-series connected positive terminals and between the negative terminal of the booster battery and the metal frame of the machine. Always connect the positive cable first when installing cables and disconnect the negative cable first when removing them. p. 23

What is the tightening torque for the cylinder head bolts on the engine?

For the engine, the M10 cylinder head bolts should be tightened to 7.5 - 8.5 kg•m (54 - 61 ft lb), and the M8 bolts should be tightened to 2.0 - 3.0 kg•m (14 - 21 ft lb). p. 150

What is the standard valve clearance for the engine?

The standard valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves on the engine is 0.25 mm (0.0098 in) when the engine is cold. p. 151

What is the engine oil capacity for the L3 engine model?

The L3 engine model has an oil capacity of 3.0/1.5 liters (0.79 - 0.40 U.S. gal.) for the upper/lower limit, or 3.6/1.8 liters (0.95 - 0.48 U.S. gal.), or 4.8/3.0 liters (1.3 - 0.79 U.S. gal.) depending on the specific configuration. p. 148

What is the injection start pressure for the engine nozzles?

The standard injection start pressure for the engine nozzles is 140 kg/cm² (1,990 psi). p. 156
