Ford issued this book as publication 40075510, the factory service manual for the 755, 755A, and 755B Tractor Loader Backhoe, and the complete 476-page Ford 755 service manual PDF is what you download here. Wiring diagrams anchor the electrical section, tracing the charging and starting circuits from battery through alternator, while hydraulic schematics map loader and backhoe flow right down to the system pressure checks. Both turbocharger builds, Air Research and Schwitzer, get their own overhaul and troubleshooting chapters, as do the transmissions, rear axle, brakes, and steering. Pull the head down in three stages, 90, 100, then 110 lbs. ft., and refill the hydraulic reservoir with its full 15 gallons (56.8 liters). A guessed torque figure cracks castings or drops a bearing. Bookmarks and a live text layer put the section you're after two taps away.

Ford 755, 755A, 755B Common Problems This Manual Covers

Ford 755 backhoe won't move or drives weak until the transmission warms up

Check transmission oil level and condition first; thick or contaminated oil starves the converter charging pump when cold. Test clutch pack pressures following the Speed Power Reversing Transmission procedures starting on page 243, tracing flow on the schematic on page 258. If the loader hydraulics also drag when cold, drain and refill the reservoir with 15 gallons (56.8 Liters) of clean oil.

Manual Section: Speed Power Reversing Transmission p. 243
Loader or backhoe cylinders leak down and the boom settles under load

Run the isolation test in the loader-backhoe hydraulics coverage starting on page 313 to separate cylinder seal leakage from valve leakage. Verify the backhoe lift circuit relief holds 2300 psi, referenced on page 432. If pressure checks good and the boom still drops, replace the piston seals and rod packing with a full seal kit.

Manual Section: Loader-Backhoe Hydraulic Troubleshooting p. 432
Engine overheats under load, temperature gauge climbs into the red while digging

Check the radiator core for packed mud and chaff; blow it clean with compressed air from the fan side. Verify thermostat and water pump operation using the cooling system troubleshooting on page 71. If the head gasket failed from overheating, torque the head bolts in three steps to a final 110 lbs. ft. (149.0 Nm).

Manual Section: Cooling System p. 71
Engine cranks slowly in cold weather and will not start without extended cranking

Test battery voltage under load first, then clean and tighten the ground cable at the frame. Trace voltage drops through the starting circuit with the wiring diagram in the Electrical System section starting on page 111. If you pull the starter, torque the mounting bolts to 30-35 lbs. ft. (40.65-47.42 Nm) on reinstall.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 111
Oil leaking from the front of the engine behind the crankshaft pulley

Remove the crankshaft pulley and inspect the front seal and the pulley wear surface; a grooved hub will chew up a new seal in a week. Replace the seal following the engine front cover procedures starting on page 5, then torque the pulley bolt to 130-160 lbs. ft. (176.1-216.8 Nm) and recheck after warm-up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct torque specification for the cylinder head bolts on the Ford 755 engine?

The cylinder head bolts should be tightened in three progressive steps: first to 90 lbs. ft. (121.9 Nm), then to 100 lbs. ft. (135.5 Nm), and finally to 110 lbs. ft. (149.0 Nm). These bolts should only be torqued when the engine is cold. p. 15

What is the specified valve lash clearance for the intake and exhaust valves on the Ford 755 engine?

The intake valve lash clearance is 0.014-0.016 in. (0.36-0.41 mm), and the exhaust valve lash clearance is 0.017-0.019 in. (0.43-0.48 mm). p. 78

What is the recommended oil capacity for the transmission on the Ford 755?

The transmission capacity is 28 U.S. Qts. (23.3 Imp. Qts.; 26.4 liters). p. 216

How do I check the flatness of the cylinder head?

Use a straight edge and feeler gauge to check the flatness lengthwise, diagonally, and crosswise. The maximum overall flatness specification is 0.006 in. (0.15 mm), or 0.003 in. (0.076 mm) in any six inches. p. 10

What is the correct torque for the main bearing bolts on the Ford 755 engine?

The main bearing bolts should be tightened to a torque of 115-125 lbs. ft. (155.8-166.8 Nm). p. 84

Will this Ford 755 Service Manual download right away?

A single searchable PDF file of 476 pages, downloadable right after payment. Nothing ships, nothing waits in the mail.
