Every model in Ford's GT lawn and garden tractor series, four in all, from the diesel pair through the Kohler-powered gas machines, is covered in this 466-page factory service manual, OEM number 40006540. If you landed here hunting a Ford GT85 service manual PDF, the complete Kohler engine section is here too, running from teardown through crankcase splitting, valve timing, and final reassembly. Wiring diagrams trace both electrical systems, glow plugs and fuel stop solenoid on the diesel side, ignition and charging on the gas side, while hydraulic schematics back up the hydrostatic drive overhaul with pressure test procedures. Gap the spark plugs at 0.025 inch; if the starter just clicks, test the solenoid coil for 5.2 to 6.3 ohms before ordering parts. Nobody at the dealer remembers these tractors. Bookmarks and a real text layer drop you into the transaxle or steering section in seconds, so your Saturday goes to fixing instead of page flipping.

Ford GT65–GT95 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Ford GT65 diesel cranks slowly or won't start after sitting in the barn all winter
Load test the battery before condemning the starter. On the diesel the starting circuit runs through two relays, the starter relay and the fuel stop solenoid relay, shown in Figure 3-3 on page 240, together with the 5 amp fuse that feeds the fuel stop solenoid circuit; check those before pulling the starter. Then verify glow plug operation before a cold start.
Manual Section: Diesel Engine Troubleshooting p. 240Kohler engine on the gas models misfires and dies after fuel sat over winter
Drain the stale fuel and clean the carburetor bowl before anything else; varnish from old gas is the usual culprit. Remove the spark plugs, clean or replace them, and set the gap to 0.025 in. per page 106. Service the air cleaner too; fuel system procedures start on page 119.
Manual Section: Kohler Engine Service Manual (GT85 and GT95) - Air Cleaner and Fuel System p. 119Hydrostatic drive feels weak, tractor creeps uphill or stops moving once the oil warms up
Check the transmission oil level and drive belt condition first; a low reservoir or glazed belt mimics a dying pump. If both look good, run pressure tests: the high pressure relief valve should hold 2773 to 3200 PSI (190 to 220 bar) per page 333, and charge pressure should read 57 to 85 PSI, spec on page 334.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic Drive System p. 309Diesel engine runs hot and pushes coolant out the overflow during long mowing passes
Clean grass chaff off the radiator screen and fins before chasing parts. Pressure test the radiator cap; it should hold 13 psi (0.9 bar). Drain and refill with fresh coolant, capacity is 2.71 qts. (2.56 liters), both specs on page 77. Overheating diagnosis steps start.
Manual Section: Diesel Engine Troubleshooting p. 77PTO switch clicks on but the mid-mount mower deck blades never spin up
Check the PTO belt for glazing, stretch, or a seized idler pulley before blaming electrics. Spin each deck spindle by hand to feel for rough bearings. Then test the PTO switch and interlock continuity against the wiring diagram, and load test the 32 amp. hr. battery. Implement drive overhaul starts on page 411.
Manual Section: Implement Drive p. 411Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head bolts on the GT65 and GT75 diesel engines?
The cylinder head bolts for the GT65 and GT75 diesel engines must be tightened in stages to a torque of 25-28 lbs. ft. (33-38 N-m). p. 30
What is the recommended service interval for changing the engine oil and filter?
For the Kohler Magnum M18 and M20 engines, the oil and filter should be changed every 50 hours when using a filter, or every 25 hours without a filter, under normal conditions. p. 108
What is the correct spark plug gap for the Kohler Magnum M18 and M20 engines?
The spark plug gap for the Kohler Magnum M18 and M20 engines should be set to 0.025 inches. p. 111
What is the procedure for bleeding the diesel fuel system on the GT65 and GT75 tractors?
To bleed the fuel system, open the bleed screw on the fuel line, turn the key to the 'ON' position to operate the electric fuel pump until air bubbles stop, then tighten the screw. Finally, loosen injector line nuts one at a time at the injector and crank the engine until fuel flows without air, then tighten to 18-22 lbs. ft. (24-29 Nm) torque. p. 205
What is the required valve-to-tappet clearance for the Kohler Magnum M18 and M20 engines?
The intake valve-to-tappet clearance should be 0.003-0.006 inches, and the exhaust valve-to-tappet clearance should be 0.016-0.019 inches, measured in a cold condition. p. 113
