This is the factory repair manual for the New Holland Genesis 70 and 70A Series - the 8670, 8770, 8870 and 8970 in both original and A trim. It covers the full tractor: 7.5 L engine teardown and lubrication, Powershift transmission splitting and repair, Dana and Carraro FWD axles including Supersteer, the tandem gear and axial piston hydraulic pumps, hydrostatic steering, power brakes with trailer air brake systems, and the Electronic Instrument Cluster with its fault codes and diagnostics. Wiring diagrams sit in Section 55 Chapter 6 starting on page 1952 with an index on page 1967, and there is a full-page hydraulic schematic on page 944. Written for the person actually splitting the tractor, not just topping off fluids.

New Holland 8670-8970 (70 & 70A Series) Common Problems This Manual Covers
Harsh or slipping shifts after any transmission or clutch pack repair
The Powershift stores clutch calibration values that no longer match new friction material. Read and reset them through EIC Mode 10 or the PDT following the Transmission section procedures on pages 323 and 333 before blaming the rebuild.
Manual Section: Transmission p. 323Low hydraulic pressure, slow three-point hitch, or remotes that stall under load
Work through the unloader valve diagnosis in the Hydraulic Systems section, pages 887 to 910. Verify the port opens below 5.2 bar (75 PSI) and the unloader closes below 6.9 bar (100 PSI), then test the tandem gear pump and axial piston pump against the flow divider procedures.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Systems p. 887Four-wheel drive engaging or dropping out unexpectedly, especially when braking
FWD engagement is tied to the brakes through the EIC on these tractors. The manual covers the front-wheel-drive and brake interaction logic around page 390, plus the four-wheel drive clutch itself in the Drive Lines section, so you can separate an electrical fault from a worn clutch.
Manual Section: Front Mechanical Drive p. 390Overheating or coolant loss on the 7.5 L engine
The Engine section covers the cooling system with real numbers to test against: thermostat opens at 81 C, engine oil capacity is 21.3 L (22.5 U.S. qts.) with filter, both on page 148. Follow the cooling system chapter before pulling the engine, which the book also covers step by step.
Manual Section: Engine p. 148Frequently Asked Questions
The transmission was apart and now the Powershift shifts rough. Does this manual cover clutch calibration?
Yes, and this is the part you cannot skip after transmission work. The stored calibration values are read through EIC Mode 10 or with the PDT, covered on pages 323 and 333. The manual walks through reading and resetting calibration so the clutch packs fill correctly instead of slamming or slipping. p. 323
The EIC is flashing fault codes. Can I diagnose them without dealer equipment?
Mostly yes. The Electrical Systems section covers the Electronic Instrument Cluster and its diagnostic modes, with the Fault Codes and Diagnostics chapter starting on page 1518. The EIC display modes and the PDT are the only tools the book calls for - this tractor predates laptop scan tools, so the cluster itself is your diagnostic window. p. 1518
Hydraulics are weak or surging. Where do I start?
Section on Hydraulic Systems, specifically the unloader valve diagnosis on pages 887 to 910. The book gives the actual test windows: the port opens below 5.2 bar (75 PSI) and the unloader closes below 6.9 bar (100 PSI). It also covers the tandem gear pump, axial piston pump, flow divider and remote valves separately, so you can isolate which circuit is down. p. 887
Are the wiring diagrams actually usable, or just an overview page?
Full diagrams. Section 55 Chapter 6 has the complete wiring diagrams starting on page 1952, with an index on page 1967 so you can jump straight to the circuit you need - starting, charging, lighting, EIC, and the electro-hydraulic remote valve control system are all in there. p. 1952
Does it cover both the Dana and Carraro front axles?
Yes. The Front Mechanical Drive section covers the four-wheel drive Dana axle, the Dana Supersteer, and the Carraro axle as separate chapters. Check which axle your tractor has before ordering parts - the 70 and 70A series used both, and the internals are not interchangeable. p. 411
