This is the factory Service Training guide (doc S70/SG-1-5/94) that New Holland put in front of dealer technicians for one tractor wearing two badges: the Ford Series 70 (8670, 8770, 8870, 8970) and the Fiatagri Serie G (G170, G190, G210, G240), built 1993 to 1997. It explains how each system works and how to fault-find it, which is exactly what you need on this electronically controlled generation. Inside: engine overhaul, timing and turbocharging, Powershift description, overhaul and calibration, rear axle and brakes, the full hydraulic package with electronic draft control and hydrostatic steering, electrical circuit diagrams, instrument cluster codes F200 to F299, plus chassis work like pressure testing, cab removal and splitting the tractor.

New Holland 8770, 8870, 8970) / Fiatagri Serie G Common Problems This Manual Covers
Harsh or slipping Powershift engagement
Before pulling the transmission, check clutch pressure at the transmission control valve test plug; the manual specifies 16.5 to 18 bar (page 899). Low pressure points to the control valve or supply, good pressure points to the clutch packs.
Manual Section: Pressure Testing p. 899Hitch drops, hunts or ignores draft control
Pull codes first, then run fault code F024, the EDC hitch calibration routine (page 544), which cures most erratic lift behavior after sensor or linkage work without replacing a single component.
Manual Section: Electronic Instrument Cluster p. 544Weak or slow hydraulics under load
Start with a pressure test rather than condemning the pump. The variable flow piston pump should hold 18 bar (265 lbf/in2) standby pressure (page 311); if it will not, the hydraulic pumps section covers diagnosis and repair.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Pumps p. 311Heavy steering at low engine speed
The hydrostatic steering section gives the relief valve setting of 2500 lbf/in2 (172 bar) at page 403, so the steering supply can be gauge-tested instead of guessing between the pump, relief valve and steering motor.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic Steering Description and Overhaul p. 403Frequently Asked Questions
My instrument cluster is flashing fault codes. Does this manual decode them?
Yes. The Fault Finding section covers electronic instrument cluster codes F200 to F299 (page 561), plus separate fault-finding chapters for the hydraulic lift and EDC, right hand controls, electronic transmission control and engine control. On this generation you chase codes first, not wires, and this guide is written around exactly that. p. 561
The rear hitch is acting up after I replaced a sensor. How do I recalibrate the EDC?
The manual documents fault code F024, which runs the EDC hitch calibration routine (page 544). Any time the lift behaves oddly after electronic or linkage work, that routine is the first stop before you start swapping parts. The hydraulic lift and EDC fault-finding chapter walks through the rest. p. 544
Powershift is slipping or shifting rough. Can I actually test it, or just guess?
You can test it. Powershift clutch pressure is checked at the transmission control valve test plug and should read 16.5 to 18 bar (page 899). That one gauge reading tells you whether the problem is hydraulic supply or a worn clutch pack before the transmission ever comes apart. p. 899
I have a Fiatagri G210, not a Ford. Is this the right book?
Yes, same tractor, different badge. This guide covers the Ford Series 70 and Fiatagri Serie G together because they are one platform: Ford 8670/8770/8870/8970 and Fiatagri G170/G190/G210/G240 all run the same 6-cylinder inline 456 cu in (7472 cc) engine, turbocharged across the board, with the 210 and 240 HP models intercooled and the 170 and 190 HP models not (page 125). p. 125
Is this a step-by-step workshop manual or something else?
It is the factory Service Training guide (doc S70/SG-1-5/94), the book dealer technicians were trained from. It explains how each system works and how to fault-find it, with real overhaul coverage and specs like the three-stage cylinder head bolt torque sequence (page 105). For diagnosis-heavy work on these tractors it is often more useful than a bare procedure book. p. 105
