Ford 8000-9700 Series & TW-10/20/30 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Ford TW-20 steering wheel turns unaided, front wheels jerk stop to stop without driver input

Check the power steering troubleshooting chart on page 7 first. Test relief pressure at 700 rpm; TW models should hold 2500-2600 psi. Pull the hydramotor and inspect the control valve spool for sticking or scoring, check the spool spring, and verify the check ball seats in the manual steer check. Replace scored spools.

Engine cranks but won't start, or starts then dies after a few seconds

Bleed the fuel system at the filters and injection pump, then work through the no-start steps on pages 35-36. Check for air leaks on the suction side and confirm the lift pump delivers fuel. On 8000 through 9700 models, verify cranking compression of 380-480 psi at 200 rpm before condemning the injection pump.

Three-point hitch fails to lift under load or raises implement too slowly when oil warms

Test hydraulic relief pressure at 700 rpm, closing the shut-off valve only long enough to read the gage. Adjust with 0.010 or 0.026 inch shims; never exceed 0.080 inch total pack thickness. Work through the lift troubleshooting steps on pages 79-80, then check flow control valve clearance of 0.0005-0.0011 inch covered on page 86.

Dual Power unit won't shift into underdrive, or clutch slips under a heavy pull

Check Dual Power hydraulic oil pressure first; TW-10 and TW-20 models should show 185-220 psi (page 52). Verify control rod and linkage adjustment with the procedure on pages 52-53 before pulling the unit. If pressure and linkage check good, inspect the direct drive and underdrive clutch packs for worn or warped plates.

PTO stalls under load, or keeps turning after the control lever is shifted off

Adjust the PTO brake band before tearing anything down: loosen the locknut, tighten the band adjusting screw to 9-11 in.-lbs., back it off 1 1/2 turns, then lock it (page 79). Check clutch control cable and linkage travel, then test PTO system pressure per the troubleshooting table on page 74. Replace worn clutch plates if pressure is good.
