Ford 8000-9700 Series & TW-10/20/30 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Ford TW-20 steering wheel turns unaided, front wheels jerk stop to stop without driver input
Check the power steering troubleshooting chart on page 7 first. Test relief pressure at 700 rpm; TW models should hold 2500-2600 psi. Pull the hydramotor and inspect the control valve spool for sticking or scoring, check the spool spring, and verify the check ball seats in the manual steer check. Replace scored spools.
Manual Section: Power Steering System Troubleshooting p. 7Engine cranks but won't start, or starts then dies after a few seconds
Bleed the fuel system at the filters and injection pump, then work through the no-start steps on pages 35-36. Check for air leaks on the suction side and confirm the lift pump delivers fuel. On 8000 through 9700 models, verify cranking compression of 380-480 psi at 200 rpm before condemning the injection pump.
Manual Section: Diesel Fuel System Troubleshooting p. 35Three-point hitch fails to lift under load or raises implement too slowly when oil warms
Test hydraulic relief pressure at 700 rpm, closing the shut-off valve only long enough to read the gage. Adjust with 0.010 or 0.026 inch shims; never exceed 0.080 inch total pack thickness. Work through the lift troubleshooting steps on pages 79-80, then check flow control valve clearance of 0.0005-0.0011 inch covered on page 86.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift System Troubleshooting p. 79Dual Power unit won't shift into underdrive, or clutch slips under a heavy pull
Check Dual Power hydraulic oil pressure first; TW-10 and TW-20 models should show 185-220 psi (page 52). Verify control rod and linkage adjustment with the procedure on pages 52-53 before pulling the unit. If pressure and linkage check good, inspect the direct drive and underdrive clutch packs for worn or warped plates.
Manual Section: Dual Power System Troubleshooting p. 52PTO stalls under load, or keeps turning after the control lever is shifted off
Adjust the PTO brake band before tearing anything down: loosen the locknut, tighten the band adjusting screw to 9-11 in.-lbs., back it off 1 1/2 turns, then lock it (page 79). Check clutch control cable and linkage travel, then test PTO system pressure per the troubleshooting table on page 74. Replace worn clutch plates if pressure is good.
Manual Section: Power Take-Off System Troubleshooting p. 74Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for Ford 9000 series engine bolts?
For cylinder head bolts, tighten 1/2-inch bolts or nuts to 110 ft.-lbs. using steps of 90 and 100 ft.-lbs., and 9/16-inch bolts to 160 ft.-lbs. using steps of 120 and 140 ft.-lbs. For engine to transmission bolts, tighten 5/8-inch bolts to a torque of 95-130 ft.-lbs. and 4-inch bolts to 180-220 ft.-lbs. p. 27
What are the replacement specifications for Hydramotor control valve spool?
The Hydramotor control valve spool is not serviced separately. If the spool is damaged or excessively worn, it is replaced as part of a complete housing kit or a new housing assembly, which includes necessary parts to rebuild the housing assembly. p. 9
What are the replacement specifications for Valve body housing assembly?
The valve body housing assembly is replaced as a complete unit if it is excessively worn, scored, or damaged, making the unit unfit for further service. The manual does not provide specific numerical replacement specifications for individual components of the assembly, but rather indicates replacement of the entire assembly. p. 11
What is the crankcase oil capacity for Ford 8000, 8600, 8700, 9000, 9600, 9700, TW-10, TW-20, and TW-30 models?
For 8000, 8600, 8700 models, the crankcase capacity is 10 quarts without filter change, 12 quarts with full flow filter change only, and 13 quarts with both filters changed (8000 only). For 9000, 9600, 9700 models, it is 12 quarts without filter change and 14 quarts with full flow filter change only. For TW-10, TW-20, TW-30 models, it is 18 quarts without filter change and 20 quarts with full flow filter change only. p. 3
What are the valve tappet gap specifications for intake and exhaust valves on Ford 8000, 8600, 8700, 9000, 9600, 9700, TW-10, TW-20, and TW-30 models?
The valve tappet gap for intake valves (hot) is 0.014-0.016 inch for all models. The valve tappet gap for exhaust valves (hot) is 0.017-0.019 inch for all models. p. 3
