New Holland 718 Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland 718 feed rollers stop or slow down when disconnected from power, chopper plugs constantly p. 38
Check the PTO and slip clutch troubleshooting chart on page 38 for feed roller drive disconnects. Verify the main drive slip clutch discs are not glazed or worn; heavy-duty 540 RPM clutches must break away between 9750 and 10,000 in. lbs. (1101.6-1129.8 N·m). Reset clutch spring tension per the exploded view on page 11 and re-check breakaway before running the chopper again.
Manual Section: PTO and Slip Clutch TroubleshootingReversing gearbox drive belts slip under load, feed rollers slow inconsistently during heavy crop flow p. 38
Inspect the belt slippage troubleshooting chart on page 38. Measure belt deflection at the reversing gearbox drive belts; correct tension requires 60 to 65 lbs. (266.9-289.1 N) to deflect the top strand 1 inch (25.4 mm) at mid-span between sheaves, per page 25. Tighten the adjusting bolts at the gearbox mounting points and retest under load before returning to service.
Manual Section: Belt Slippage TroubleshootingGrease seal weeps oil from the reversing gearbox housing near the feed roller drive shaft p. 24
Remove the gearbox side cover and inspect the oil seal lip for cracking or hardening. Press the new seal so the bearing recess into the housing measures 9/32 inch plus 1/32 inch minus zero, as shown on page 24. Refill the gearbox to the check plug with API multi-purpose gear lube 90W and check for weeping after a short test run.
Manual Section: Reversing Gear BoxBearing retaining ring won't seat, idler shaft works loose inside the reversing gearbox p. 24
Press the idler shaft into its housing until the edge of the snap ring land sits 1.197 inches from the gearbox housing face, per the reassembly steps on page 24. Install a new retaining ring rather than reusing a stretched one, and confirm it seats fully in its groove before pressurizing the gearbox with API 90W gear lube.
Manual Section: Reversing Gear BoxUnit runs rough with intermittent minor faults after extended field hours despite regular maintenance p. 37
Work through the base unit troubleshooting chart on page 37 to isolate cut quality, blowing action, and knife sharpness complaints one at a time. Check knife sharpness and shear bar clearance first, since dull knives cause the widest range of symptoms. Torque the knife support bolts to 170 ft. lbs. (230 N·m) as specified on page 28 whenever knives are reset or replaced.
Manual Section: Base Unit Troubleshooting (General)Frequently Asked Questions
How to reset the control mods on a New Holland 718?
To adjust the switch block, which controls the motor for the spout, flipper, and reversing gearbox, first remove the cover shield and shift the gearbox to neutral. With the control box in the "on" position, loosen bolts F (Figure 5-2) and move the block until the neutral light comes on. Then tighten bolts F and reinstall bolt C (Figure 5-2), and replace the switch block cover.
Torque specs for the slip clutch on a New Holland 718?
The recommended breakaway torque value equivalent for the PTO slip clutch varies by PTO size and horsepower. For a 540 RPM standard PTO (up to 65 HP), the torque is 7450-7750 in. lbs. (841.7-875.6 N·m). For a 540 RPM heavy-duty PTO (up to 90 HP), it's 9750-10,000 in. lbs. (1101.6-1129.8 N·m), and for a 1000 RPM standard PTO (up to 90 HP), it's 5550-5850 in. lbs. (627.0-660.9 N·m).
What are the replacement specifications for grease seals?
When replacing gearbox seals, always install new ones prior to reassembly and thoroughly coat their lips and mating surfaces with grease. For the main drive gearbox, the oil seals W and F should be recessed 1½" into the seal retainer Y, as measured at EE (Figure 2-5). For the reversing gearbox, the oil seals should have their lips turned as shown in Figure 3-3, and bearing 22 should be recessed into the housing 15 by 9/32" + 1/32" - 0".
What are the replacement specifications for bearing retaining ring?
When reassembling the reversing gearbox, if the idler shaft (8) was pressed out, the new shaft should be pressed into the housing until the edge of the snap ring land (12) is 1.197" from the gearbox housing, as shown in Figure 3-3. After this, the washer (9), gear (10), washer (11), and retaining ring (12) can be reinstalled.
