Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
This is the full 1207 page factory service manual for the New Holland Boomer 40 and Boomer 50 compact tractors, gear and hydrostatic versions, with serial number breaks printed for both models. Inside you get teardown and rebuild coverage for the 2.5L S4QL four cylinder diesel (40.4 and 46.4 hp), clutch, mechanical transmission, hydrostatic drive, front and rear axles, two speed rear and central PTO, brakes, steering, and the hydraulic system with its printed test pressures. The electrical side gets a complete tractor schematic plus starting and charging system procedures. Specs are the real factory numbers, down to the front wheel nut torque of 176 - 196 N.m (130 - 145 lb ft), not forum guesses.

New Holland Boomer 40, Boomer 50 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine runs hot or pushes coolant out of the overflow
The Engine cooling system chapter in section 10 gives the test points before you pull anything: thermostat starts opening at 76.5 C (170 F) and is fully open at 90 C (194 F), the radiator cap must hold 90 kPa (13 psi), and belt deflection should be 10-13 mm with 10 kg pressure applied midway between the pulleys.
Manual Section: Engine - 10 (Engine cooling system) p. 769Three point hitch lifts slowly or stalls under load
Before condemning the pump, verify system relief pressure against the printed spec of 16671 kPa (2418 psi) at the mid mount two spool valve. Section 35 then covers the fixed displacement pump, the hitch control valve, and the reservoir, cooler, and filters, where most slow hitch complaints actually start.
Manual Section: Hydraulic systems - 35 p. 433Slow cranking or no start
Section 55 lays out the engine starting system tests in order. Load test the battery against its 12 V, 660 CCA (BCI Group 34) spec, confirm the 50 A alternator output, then chase voltage drops using the complete tractor schematic on sheet 01 instead of swapping parts on a hunch.
Manual Section: Electrical systems - 55 p. 900Hydrostatic drive feels weak, fades on hills, or responds slowly when hot
Section 29 covers the transmission and steering hydrostatic control plus pump and motor components with full disassembly and inspection procedures. Check oil condition and the filters first; worn pump or motor parts are what show up as fade under load, and the section tells you what to measure before buying anything.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic drive - 29 p. 615Frequently Asked Questions
Does this manual cover both the gear and hydrostatic versions of the Boomer 40 and 50?
Yes. Section 21 covers the mechanical transmission and its internal components, and section 29 covers the hydrostatic drive, including the transmission and steering hydrostatic control and the pump and motor components. Serial breaks are printed for both models, so you can match procedures to your exact tractor. p. 43
What are the valve clearance and idle specs for the S4QL engine?
Valve clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in) intake and exhaust, set cold, with a 1-3-4-2 firing order. Section 10 walks the adjustment and gives the governed speeds: low idle 830±20 RPM, high idle 2780±30 RPM, rated speed 2600 RPM. p. 652
Are full wiring diagrams included, and does it list fault codes?
You get the complete tractor schematic (sheet 01, page 900) plus section 55 coverage of the starting system, battery (12 V, 660 CCA, BCI Group 34), 50 A alternator, lighting, and electronic modules. This era of Boomer prints no fault codes, so diagnosis is done with a meter and the schematic, and the manual is built for exactly that. p. 900
My three point hitch is slow or weak. Does the manual give actual test pressures?
Yes. System pressure is 16671 kPa (2418 psi), regulated by the relief valve in the mid mount two spool valve, and the manual shows where to tee in and check it. Section 35 covers the fixed displacement pump, hitch control valve, remote valves, and the reservoir, cooler, and filters. p. 769
Does it cover the central (mid) PTO used for mower decks?
Yes. Section 31 covers the central PTO along with the two speed rear PTO and both the rear mechanical and rear electro-hydraulic PTO controls, so the mid mount mower drive is serviced from the same book. p. 533
