Pulling the wrench work for four skid-steer loader models into one 1000-page book, this New Holland LX865 repair manual PDF covers the whole family, L865 through LX985. Full wiring diagrams anchor the electrical section, tracing every circuit from the accessory relay and engine fuse block out through the harness connectors. Hydrostatic drive testing gets its own chapter, with pump and charge-pump procedures that end in a pass-or-replace verdict, and the hydraulic schematics carry through the loader control valve to the auxiliary and high-flow boom circuits. Before you condemn a starter, check the fuse block against the printed values, 10A on fuse 1 and 25A on fuse 2, then torque the turbocharger to its manifold at 41-47 N·m. Some days it's you, the loader, and nobody to ask. This PDF travels wherever the machine sits, bookmarked by system and searchable by keyword, ready when you are.

New Holland L865, LX865, LX885, LX985 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland LX865 boom raises slowly and jerks, hydraulics feel weak with fluid full

Check the hydraulic filter and change it if it has never been logged. Bleed air from the system, then tee a gauge into the loader circuit and stall a boom cylinder. On L865, LX865, and LX885 the relief valve should hold 2500-2600 PSI per page 715; below that, inspect the relief valve and control valve spools for wear.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 715
Foot control pedals lock up suddenly and boom pedal will not release

Start with the 5A seat switch fuse in position 4 on the fuse chart, page 424, then test the seat and seat belt switches for continuity. Measure voltage at the interlock solenoid; it should read 0.5 to 1.0 volt below battery voltage per page 422. If you replace a coil, torque it to 15 N·m (11 ft. lbs.).

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 424
Machine only runs in service mode and keeps blowing the EIC fuse

Trace the 5A fuse feeding EIC board pin 14 at the P2 connector, listed on the fuse chart on page 424. Inspect that circuit for chafed insulation and shorts to ground using the wiring diagrams in the Electrical System section starting on page 296. Budget 6.0 hours flat rate if the main harness must be replaced (page 479).

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 424
Starter will not engage unless the key is cycled several times or jumped directly

Test the starter relay and start interlock relay first; each swaps out in 0.5 hour per the flat rate table on page 479. Measure the excite resistor with an ohmmeter and replace it if it reads outside 50 ohms ± 5 ohms (page 426). Clean and tighten the battery cables and ground strap before condemning the starter.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 480
Boom drifts down slowly and bucket will not hold position unless the pedal is kicked

Look for cylinder bypass first: raise the boom, cap one cylinder line, and watch whether the drift stops. Reseal leaking cylinders; L865, LX865, and LX885 boom cylinders run a 63.5 mm bore (page 715), so match the seal kit to the bore. If drift continues with lines capped, inspect the loader valve spool for wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do New Holland skid steer error codes F0, F1, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8, F9, and FA mean?

These codes indicate specific faults in the EIC system. For example, F0-00 indicates a hydraulic oil filter fault, F1-00 indicates an air cleaner fault, F3-00 indicates an engine preheat fault, F4-00 indicates a fuel solenoid fault, F5-00 indicates an engine coolant temperature fault, F6-00 indicates a hydrostatic transmission charge pressure fault, F7-00 indicates a transmission/hydraulic oil temperature fault, F8-00 indicates a battery fault, F9-00 indicates an engine oil pressure fault, and FA-00 indicates a hydraulic boom/bucket solenoid fault. p. 375

What are the torque specifications for the main bearing bolts on the L865, LX865, and LX885 engines?

The main bearing bolts for the L865, LX865, and LX885 engines must be torqued to 163 N·m (120 ft. lbs.). p. 75

What is the correct procedure to clear fault codes from the EIC board memory?

To clear faults, press and release the 'ARROW' switch until 'CLr F' appears in the character display. Then, press and hold the 'OPEN BOOK' switch until 'CLEAR' appears in the display. Release the switch to clear all fault occurrences from the memory. p. 376

What is the required torque for the cylinder head bolts on the LX985 engine?

The cylinder head bolts for the LX985 engine must be tightened in sequence from the center of the head in three stages: Stage 1 to 156 N·m (115 ft. lbs.), Stage 2 to 190 N·m (140 ft. lbs.), and Stage 3 to 217 N·m (160 ft. lbs.). p. 213
