Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
Need the factory book for your New Holland L-781, L-784, or L-785? This 106-page service manual (OEM #40078130) covers all three skid-steer loaders with the same hydrostatic drive and boom hydraulics running through them. You get complete wiring diagrams for the alternator and seat-activated boom lockout circuit, hydraulic schematics for the piston pumps and control valve, and a full troubleshooting section when the machine won't move right or the boom won't hold. Set the hydrostatic pump-to-engine bolts to 27 ft-lbs, then torque the boom cylinder piston locknut to 155 ft-lbs before you button it back up. Your gear pump specs, final drive chain procedures, and steering adjustment steps are all here too, no aftermarket guesswork. Stop tearing into a hydrostatic transmission blind. Bookmarked by section so you can jump straight to the repair you're chasing instead of scrolling past 90 pages to find it.

New Holland L-781, L-784, L-785 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Boom won't raise or lower even though hydraulics feel fine everywhere else
Check the seat activated boom lockout circuit on page 79 before assuming a valve problem. Verify the seat switch closes fully when weighted and test the electronic solenoid for continuity; a sticking solenoid will hold the lift circuit locked out regardless of operator position. If the solenoid tests fine, inspect the hydraulic valve in the lockout circuit for a stuck spool.
Manual Section: Seat Activated Boom Lockout p. 79Alternator light stays on or battery won't hold charge after a full day of running
Run the alternator test procedures on page 75 before swapping parts. Check output against the 37 amp standard alternator capacity spec, then run the excitation voltage test and regulator bypass test in sequence to isolate whether the fault is in the alternator itself or the regulator. Don't replace the alternator until both tests are documented.
Manual Section: Electrical System p. 75Final drive chain rattles or jumps under load on rough ground
Inspect the final drive chain and gear-sprocket assembly per the disassembly steps starting on page 59. Check chain slack against the adjustment procedure in this section and inspect the idler assembly for worn bushings that let the chain wander. Torque wheel lug bolts to 150 ft. lbs. when reinstalling after any final drive service.
Manual Section: Final Drive p. 59Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the piston locknut on the New Holland L781's boom and bucket cylinders?
For the boom cylinders, the piston locknut torque is 155 ft. lbs. (213 N·m). For the bucket cylinder, the piston locknut torque is between 120 ft. lbs. and 130 ft. lbs. (162 N·m-176 N·m). p. 49
How do you fix new Holland L-781 skid steer pulls hard to one side, steering adjustment won't hold setting?
Check the drive control adjustment procedure starting on page 11. Loosen the external stop bolt jam nuts and reset both stop bolts to center the neutral position before adjusting linkage. Verify the servo cylinder isn't leaking past worn seals internally; if travel feels spongy on one side, pull and rebuild the servo cylinder per the labor guide on page 11. p. 11
How do you fix no ground drive in either direction even with engine running at full RPM?
Start with the troubleshooting procedures on page 84 for no ground drive conditions. Confirm the hydrostatic charge pressure is present at the pump before tearing into anything. If pressure is absent, pull the gear pump per the removal steps on page 45 and check the gear pump displacement against the 1.69 cu. in. per revolution spec; worn gears here will kill charge pressure fast. p. 84
How do you fix loader creeps forward or backward on level ground with the control lever in neutral?
Work through the loader creeps section of the troubleshooting procedures on page 84 first. Recheck the drive control neutralizer adjustment on page 11; a neutralizer that's off-center even slightly will let the pump swash plate hold a residual angle. If creep persists after adjustment, the piston pump internals are likely worn and need to come out per the removal steps on page 17. p. 84
