New Holland H9870, H9880 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Load rack will not rise
First check whether the push-off feet are extended, and retract them if they are. Next test the LS coil and replace it if resistance is greater than 10 Ω. If the coil is good, check for low oil pressure at the PPG port, which points to the piston pump. Last, pull the load rack (LR) valve and check for a bound spool. The full test sequence is in the Bale Loading, Storing and Unloading Hydraulics problem solving chart.
Manual Section: Bale Loading, Storing and Unloading Hydraulics p. 743First table does not deliver in auto or manual mode
Check the safety gate first. If it is down, raise it. Then test the proximity sensors for second table down, load rack down, spike down and bale loader down, using the sensor tests in Electronic Modules. If those pass, test load sense solenoid L-20 for an electrical fault in the load sense valve.
Manual Section: Bale Wagons p. 1653Engine overheats
Start with the radiator and expansion tank caps, and replace any cap that is not sealing. Clean restricted radiator fins with compressed air. Replace the thermostat if it is faulty. If you find exhaust gas getting into the coolant, replace the cylinder head gasket and check the head for damage or distortion. The engine cooling system problem solving chart covers each step.
Manual Section: Engine p. 124Brakes not working, excessive pedal travel or spongy pedal
Check the brake fluid level first. Low fluid or air in the system means topping up, bleeding and finding the leak. Look for brake tubing routed near a heat source, because hot fluid can boil. If the pedal is hard instead, an overloaded vehicle is the listed cause, so lighten the load. The bleed procedure and master cylinder work are in Brakes and Controls.

Which New Holland bale wagons does this service manual cover?
This is New Holland part number 47918070, dated December 2015, and it replaces 84175489. It covers the H9870 and H9880 self-propelled bale wagons for North America, and both use the F4GE9684 engine. Some content applies to the H9880 only, such as the auxiliary first table for flat delivery. p. 1
What are the H9870 and H9880 engine specifications?
The F4GE9684 displaces 6.7 l (408.9 in³) with firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. Rated speed is 2300 RPM and peak torque is 765 N·m (564 lb ft) at 1300 RPM. Valve lash is 0.25 +/- 0.05 mm (0.01 +/- 0.002 in) intake and 0.50 +/- 0.05 mm (0.02 +/- 0.002 in) exhaust. The engine section covers removal and installation, the air cleaner, turbocharger, manifolds, aftercooler and cooling system. p. 30
What are the H9870 and H9880 hydraulic system specs?
The closed-center system runs a load-sensing variable piston pump with a maximum flow of 110 l/min (29 US gpm). The reservoir holds 72 l (19 US gal) and the whole system holds 94.6 l (25 US gal). The accumulator takes a 3103 kPa (450 psi) pre-charge. You also get hydraulic schemas for the piston pump and gear pump manifolds, the check valves, the main control valve relief valves and the system cycle times. p. 32
What are the H9870 and H9880 capacities and tire pressures?
The tank holds 283 l (75 US gal). Engine oil with filter is 14.2 l (15 US qt), the cooling system is 30 l (7.9 US gal) and the hydraulic system is 94.6 l (25 US gal). Tires run at 827 kPa (120 psi) front and rear. The transmission is an Allison 2500 RDS (Rugged duty service), and the rear axle ratio in road travel range is 7.17:1. p. 34
What is inside this manual: schematics, diagnostics, troubleshooting?
You get electrical schematic sheets 01 to 42 with connector diagrams, covering engine starting, charging, the transmission, CAN communications, solenoids and more. There is also a fold-out electrical schematic, a fold-out hydraulic schematic and hydraulic schemas for each piston pump manifold mode. Stack Command display input and output tests are included. There are problem solving charts for the bale hydraulics, brakes, engine cooling, air conditioning and electrics. The book has no fault code table, and reading the Allison transmission codes takes Allison software. p. 1117
