Before you back off the track adjuster or pull a travel motor this afternoon, open the 571-page Takeuchi TB285 service manual PDF (OEM ID CM1E006) for this hydraulic excavator. Hydraulic schematics trace oil from the main pump through the control valve to the boom, arm, dozer and slew circuits, and wiring diagrams lay out the electrical side wire by wire. Disassembly and assembly fill the biggest share of the book, from crawler replacement and slew bearing work to pump, pilot valve and cylinder rebuilds, while a long troubleshooting chapter sorts faults by whole machine, travel, slew, boom and arm. Set rubber track tension to 160 to 180 mm (6.3 to 7.1 in.), then check boom and arm relief at 27.5 MPa (3988 PSI) and right slew relief at 24.0 MPa (3480 PSI). A made-up relief figure can split a hose under load. With bookmarks and searchable text, you can confirm which seal kit or bearing you need before you order.

Takeuchi TB285 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Takeuchi TB285 insufficient power with boom, arm, bucket, and slew slow or failing to move

Check pilot pressure first; it should read 3.4 MPa (493 PSI) per page 29. Then gauge main relief pressure against 27.5 MPa (3990 psi) listed on page 19. With both in spec, work the Overall Machine troubleshooting steps toward the hydraulic pump and control valve before pulling any cylinder apart.

Manual Section: Overall Machine
No right or left travel, machine veers off line, or will not shift into 2nd speed travel

Verify pilot pressure reads 3.4 MPa (493 PSI) per page 29 before blaming a travel motor. Then follow the Traveling troubleshooting to isolate the dead side. If it points to the motor or swivel joint, the teardown procedures start on page 356 under Travel and Slew Motors.

Manual Section: Traveling
Rubber track shows no tension or lack of tension even after adjusting the track adjuster

Measure rubber crawler track tension against 160 to 180 mm (6.3 to 7.1 in.) per page 26. If the adjuster will not bring it into range or will not hold it, inspect the idler and track adjuster using the Drive and Travel Systems procedures that begin on page 173.

Manual Section: Shoe Tension
Upper structure will not slew, slews slowly while lacking force, or overruns past the stopping point

Test right and left slew circuit relief pressure against 24.0 MPa (3480 PSI) per page 29. Run the Slewing troubleshooting to separate a valve problem from a motor problem. If it lands on the slew motor or brake valve, disassembly procedures start on page 356.

Manual Section: Slewing
Boom cylinder lifts slowly, lacks force, or boom drops spontaneously while holding position

Test boom circuit relief pressure against 27.5 MPa (3988 PSI) per page 29. If pressure is in spec and the boom still drops on its own, the cylinder is next. Lower the boom to the ground, then pull and inspect the cylinder following the Cylinder Disassembly procedures in Hydraulic Components, starting on page 231.

Manual Section: Boom
Track roller measured at or below the allowable dimension A during an undercarriage wear inspection

Measure track roller dimension A against the 120 mm standard and replace any roller at the 116 mm allowable value, both listed on page 174. Torque the new roller bolts to 158 N·m per page 190, and recheck rubber crawler track tension at 160 to 180 mm afterward.

Manual Section: Drive and Travel Systems p. 174

Frequently Asked Questions

What does TB285 error code 102 mean?

Error code 102 indicates a CAN communications abnormality (bus off). p. 120

What are the engine oil and oil filter replacement specs for the Takeuchi TB285?

The engine oil pan requires Diesel engine oil (API: CF class or above) with a capacity of 10.2 L (10.8 US qt.) for the upper limit and 5.7 L (6.0 US qt.) for the lower limit. The oil should be changed every 250 hours after the first 50 hours. p. 23

What is the tightening torque for the hydraulic hose union nut on a 1/2 inch hose fitting on the Takeuchi TB285?

The tightening torque for a 1/2 inch hydraulic hose union nut (G) is 58.8 +4.9/0 N·m (43.4 +3.5/0 ft.-lb.). p. 38

What is the procedure for bleeding air from the hydraulic cylinder?

After replacing hydraulic oil or a hydraulic device, start the engine and let it idle for approximately five minutes. Then, at slow speed, extend and retract each cylinder four or five times without letting them reach the stroke end. Finally, repeat this at top speed, then run at slow speed and move the piston rod to the stroke end to bleed the air. p. 234

What exactly do I receive with this Takeuchi TB285 Service Manual?

Immediate download of the complete 571-page searchable Service Manual. Access it on any device, from a laptop at your desk to a phone in the field.

Does this Takeuchi TB285 manual allow printing?

Yes. It prints from any PDF reader, so run off the pages you need for your own repair work.

Does this Takeuchi TB285 manual show the hydraulic circuits?

Full hydraulic system diagrams are included, covering circuits, valve locations, and hydraulic component specs for the Takeuchi TB285. See page 41 for an example.
