Set the park brake, chock a wheel and put a torque wrench on the inner wheel bolts: the Versatile 700 tells you a wheel is loose long before anything shears, and the figure you need is in the Routine Service and Lubrication section.

The book runs 72 pages for the Versatile 700 four wheel drive tractor with the Cummins V555, publication 42070030, and it arrives as a PDF you can read on a phone at the headland or print one page at a time for the bench. Specifications, Controls and Instruments, Operation, Fuels Fluids and Lubricants, Routine Service and Lubrication, Troubleshooting, Storage and Preparation, Electrical System and Hydraulic System each get their own chapter.

Use it to set service intervals, torque wheel and axle hardware, adjust the clutch, change the hydraulic filters, and work through a steering complaint with the troubleshooting chart, so the 700 goes back to the field instead of onto a waiting list.

Versatile 700 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Wheel bolts back off under field load

On a four wheel drive tractor pulling heavy tillage, a loose wheel usually announces itself as a knock in the turns before anything breaks. Routine Service and Lubrication gives inner wheel bolts at 220 ft-lbs (30.4 kgm) and tie rod bolts at 150 ft-lbs (20.7 kgm), so you can check them with a torque wrench instead of a guess.

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 45
Clutch drags and gears grind

A clutch that will not release cleanly leaves you fighting the floor shift lever at the end of a row. The service section sets the release bearing to transmission brake gap at 7/16 inch (11.1 mm), which is the adjustment most drag complaints come back to.

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 47
Oil weeping after a filter change

A full-flow filter head that seeps is nearly always a cap screw pulled down by feel. The manual calls for 25 to 35 ft-lbs on the center cap screw when the new filter assembly is seated in the head.

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 50
Heavy steering and hot hydraulic oil

Steering that goes stiff at low engine speed, or oil that runs hot, is traced in the book to idle set too low, a clogged filter, air leaks, low oil level or a low relief valve setting. The Troubleshooting section walks steering, hydraulic pump, oil heating, control valve pressure and stuck valve spool complaints in order.

Manual Section: Troubleshooting p. 59
Dead batteries and no charge

These tractors sit between seasons, and a slow crank in spring is usually batteries, cables or a tired alternator rather than the starter itself. Routine Service covers the battery checks, and the Electrical System section prints the two-part electrical schematic.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 64
Wrong fluids cause cold weather grief

Fuel that waxes on a cold morning, coolant mixed wrong, or calcium chloride ballast left leaking onto rims will all cost you a day in season. The Fuels, Fluids, and Lubricants section states what diesel, coolant, hydraulic fluid and lubricants the 700 takes.

Manual Section: Fuels, Fluids, and Lubricants p. 32
Ballast and hitch set wrong for the load

Front end light on a big draft load, or wheel slip that chews tires, comes down to ballast and hitch setup rather than engine trouble. The Operation section covers tire ballast, three-point hitch use, shifting gears, towing and engine break-in.

Manual Section: Operation p. 23

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tractor and engine does this manual fit?

It is the operator manual for the Versatile 700 four wheel drive tractor with the Cummins V555, publication number 42070030. The Specifications section lists engine maximum brake horsepower of 210 BHP at 2850 rpm and maximum torque of 425 ft-lb at 1750 rpm, along with transmission, axle, brake, clutch and steering data. p. 10

Is this a full repair manual?

No. It is the factory operator manual: controls, operation, fluids, routine service and lubrication, adjustments, troubleshooting and storage. It gives service intervals, adjustments and the torque figures an owner needs, but it is not an overhaul book with internal engine or transmission rebuild procedures. p. 36

What is the wheel bolt torque on a Versatile 700?

The Routine Service and Lubrication section specifies 220 ft-lbs (30.4 kgm) on the inner wheel bolts and 150 ft-lbs (20.7 kgm) on the tie rod bolts. Retorque them after the first hour of operation, then recheck at the intervals given in Routine Service. p. 45

Will it help me chase a steering or hydraulic fault?

Yes. The Troubleshooting section lists symptoms for steering, hydraulic pump, oil heating, control valve oil pressure and valve spool problems, and the Hydraulic System section covers the tandem pump, steering valve and cylinders, control valve, suction filter and return filter. p. 59

Is this Versatile 700 Operator Manual a digital download?

A 72-page Operator Manual in searchable PDF format, available the moment you complete checkout. View on computer, tablet, or phone, with no shipping wait.

Am I free to print this Versatile 700 Operator Manual?

Yes, print as many copies as you want, and there are no restrictions. Many mechanics print the section they need and bring it to the shop floor.
