It is seeding season, the 900 is parked at the headland with the implement hydraulics gone soft, and the dealer is an hour each way. This operator manual for the Versatile Series 2 Model 900 four wheel drive tractor tells you where to start: the hydraulic and transmission filters and suction screens, the relief and flow control valve settings, and a troubleshooting section aimed at steering, implement control and engine complaints.

Sixty-six pages cover the tractor as it is built around the Cummins V-903 V8 diesel: controls and instruments, starting and shifting, three-point hitch and remote hydraulics, tire inflation and ballast, fuels and lubricants, routine service intervals, storage, the electrical system with fuses and wiring diagrams, and the full system schematics.

Buy it once, print the pages you want to keep on the bench, and it stays yours for as long as you own the tractor.

Versatile Series 2 Model 900 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Implement hydraulics soft or slow under load

The hitch lifts fine with nothing on it but stalls once the ground engages, usually from low oil, a plugged screen, or a valve out of adjustment. The Troubleshooting section walks the hydraulic oil and implement control complaints in order so you test rather than guess.

Manual Section: Troubleshooting p. 49
Power loss from a plugged air cleaner

Chaff and field dust choke the air cleaner and the engine goes flat and smoky long before anything sounds wrong. The service instructions give the 20-in. (51 cm) restriction gauge reading that calls for cleaning, and cap cleaning air at 100 psi (690 kPa) so the element is not blown out from the wrong side.

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 30
Loose wheel, tie rod and axle bolts

A heavy four wheel drive tractor works its fasteners loose, and a wheel bolt left slack will elongate the holes in a single day of tillage. The torque figures are listed: inner wheel bolts at 220 ft-lbs (300 N-m), tie rod bolts at 150 ft-lbs (200 N-m), and axle bolts at 450 ft-lbs (600 N-m).

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 39
Transmission trouble from skipped filter changes

Gears, bearings and pumps do not forgive dirty oil, and a transmission failure in the middle of a field costs days. The transmission return oil line filter is changed every 200 hours, and the suction screen is washed every 400 hours.

Manual Section: Routine Service and Lubrication p. 38
Steering slow, heavy or wandering

Worn cylinder ends, a tired steering pump, or air in the circuit show up as a tractor that will not hold a line on a long pass. The steering circuit schematic lets you trace hoses and valves back to the pump instead of pulling parts on a hunch.

Manual Section: System Schematics p. 59
Dead lights or no crank

Corroded battery grounds and a tripped circuit breaker account for most of the no-start and dead-light calls on a tractor this age. The Electrical System section identifies the fuses and circuit breakers and gives the starter, lighting and cab console circuits so you can test from the source.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 54
Wheel slip from wrong ballast or inflation

Too little ballast and the tractor spins, too much and you burn fuel hauling dead weight through the field. The manual covers liquid ballast along with the fuels, coolant and hydraulic fluid specifications, and the operating section gives tire inflation and ballast guidance to match the drawbar load.

Manual Section: Fuels, Fluids and Lubricants p. 28
Hard starting after winter layup

A tractor pulled out of the shed in spring often fights back because the fuel has soured, the batteries sat discharged, and the engine was never prepared for storage. The Storage and Preparation section gives the layup steps and the after-storage startup sequence.

Manual Section: Storage and Preparation p. 52

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tractor does this operator manual cover?

It is the operator manual for the Versatile Series 2 Model 900 four wheel drive tractor, publication number 42090020, built with the Cummins V-903 V8 diesel. If your tractor carries that model and engine combination, this is the correct book for it.

What is the wheel bolt torque on a Versatile 900?

Inner wheel bolts torque to 220 ft-lbs (300 N-m). The same page lists tie rod bolts at 150 ft-lbs (200 N-m) and axle bolts at 450 ft-lbs (600 N-m), so you can check the whole corner while the wheel is off. p. 39

What are the fluid capacities of the Versatile Series 2 Model 900?

The Specifications section lists fuel tank capacity at 185 U.S. Gal (700 l), engine lube oil at 34 U.S. Qt (32.2 l), and hydraulic system capacity at 74.5 U.S. Qt (70.5 l), so you can buy oil and filters before you start rather than partway through. p. 9

Is this a full service and rebuild manual?

No. This is the operator manual, so it covers controls and instruments, operation, fuels and lubricants, routine service and lubrication, troubleshooting, storage, the electrical system with wiring diagrams, and system schematics. It does not carry component teardown and rebuild procedures.

How is this Versatile 900 Operator Manual delivered?
