Need factory data for your Case/international 235, 245, 255, 265, or 275? This 128-page Shop Manual covers the whole tractor lineup, including the 235H hydrostatic and four-wheel-drive variants, with clearances, torque values, and full teardown procedures for every major system. You get complete wiring diagrams for tracing charging and starting faults, hydraulic schematics covering the lift cover, auxiliary valve, and pump, plus a dedicated troubleshooting section for the hydrostatic transmission. Set your main hydraulic relief valve to 15,000-15,500 kPa, and confirm alternator output reads 14 volts at 8 amps at 1300 rpm before you chase a phantom charging complaint. No more guessing at pinion gap or relief pressures from a worn-out photocopy. Bookmarked by system so you jump straight to engine, clutch, or brakes without hunting, then pull it up on your phone right at the tractor.

Case/international 235–275 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case IH 235 tractor starts but throttle, transmission, and gauges show no response at all

Check the battery terminals and ground straps for corrosion first; a weak battery causes exactly this symptom. Start the engine, bring it to 1300 RPM, and test alternator output on page 56: it should read 14 Volts and at least 8 Amperes. If readings are low, inspect the wiring harness and safety switches under the Electrical System section before replacing the alternator.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 56
Starter solenoid clicks repeatedly during cold starts but engine won't crank or turn over

Pull the starter and measure pinion gap with the solenoid energized; page 59 specifies 0.5-2.0 mm (0.0197-0.0787 in.) of travel. If the gap is out of range, adjust the linkage or replace the solenoid before condemning the starter motor. Also check battery cable connections for corrosion, since a weak circuit produces the same clicking symptom without cranking.

Manual Section: Electrical System p. 59
Clunk sound in high transmission range when moving forward under load

Warm the engine to operating temperature and set low idle at 900-950 RPM per page 52, then run the hydrostatic troubleshooting checks on page 99. Verify charge pressure and cycle the pressure relief valves; a clunk on forward engagement under load usually points to a worn charge pump or contaminated fluid. Drain and refill with clean fluid before retesting.

Manual Section: Transmission 235H Hydrostatic p. 99
Hitch or loader responds slowly and fails to lift a full load

Follow the Hydraulic Lift System troubleshooting steps and confirm the control valve and drop rate adjustments are set correctly. On 265 models, test the main system relief valve on page 123: it should hold 15,000-15,500 kPa (2106-2176 psi). Low pressure points to internal cylinder leakage or a clogged filter; clean or replace the hydraulic filter before readjusting the relief valve.

Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift System p. 123
Engine bogs down under load with excessive black smoke and rising temperature

Pull the injectors and test opening pressure against page 54 specs: 10,789-12,749 kPa (1565-1849 psi) on 235, 235H, 245, and 255 models. Weak or dripping nozzles cause bogging, smoke, and overheating under load. Also confirm the radiator cap holds 88 kPa (12.8 psi) and the thermostat opens at 82°C (180°F) on page 56 before condemning the turbocharger.

Manual Section: Diesel Fuel System p. 54
Clutch slips or engages late with delayed power transfer to the drivetrain

Check clutch pedal free travel against page 64 specs: 20-30 mm (0.79-1.18 in.) on 235 and 235H models. Travel out of spec causes slipping or delayed engagement under load. Adjust the linkage under the Clutch section, then inspect the disc and pressure plate for wear if the adjustment alone doesn't restore full engagement.

Manual Section: Clutch p. 64

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for engine bolts on a Case IH 245 tractor?

For the Case IH 245 tractor, the cylinder head retaining screws should be tightened to specific torques: 10M screws at locations (1, 2 and 3) to 69-78 N.m (51-58 ft.-lbs.) and the remaining 12M screws to 108-117 N.m (80-87 ft.-lbs.). Main bearing cap retaining screws should be tightened to 49-54 N.m (36-40 ft.-lbs.) and connecting rod retaining nuts to 32-34 N.m (23-25 ft.-lbs.) torque. p. 42

What are the torque specifications for transmission mounts on a Case 275 tractor?

For the Case 275 model, screws attaching the speed transmission to the torque tube should be tightened to 118-132 N.m (87-97 ft.-lbs.) torque. Screws attaching the engine to the clutch (speed transmission) housing require 54-64 N-m (40-47 ft.-lbs.) torque. Additionally, the torque tube to rear axle center housing retaining screws should be tightened to 118-132 N.m (87-97 ft.-lbs.) and the two retaining nuts to 93-103 N.m (69-76 ft.-lbs.) torque. p. 88

What is the engine oil capacity for all Case/International models?

The engine crankcase capacity, including the filter, is 3.5 L (3.7 qt.) for 235 and 235H models, 4.5 L (4.8 qt.) for 245 and 255 models, and 4.7 L (5.0 qt.) for 265 and 275 models. Oil should be maintained between the full and add marks on the dipstick. p. 41

What is the specified valve clearance for all Case/International models?

For all models, the specified valve clearance should be adjusted with the engine cold. The correct clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) for both the inlet and exhaust valves. p. 43
