Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
This 82-page J. I. Case 5, 430, 431, 440, 441, 470, 530, 531 Shop Manual walks you through every system on these tractors, from the four-cylinder engine down to the hydrostatic power steering. You get hydraulic schematics for both the assist-type and hydrostatic steering circuits, exploded views of the engine, differential, and final drive, plus a full torque spec section covering cylinder head studs, rocker arm bracket nuts, and manifold hardware. Set your alternator output between 14.5 and 14.7 volts, and confirm firing order runs 1-3-4-2 on the four-cylinder before you chase a miss that isn't there. Your Case-O-Matic or Power Take-Off unit won't wait for a parts run, and this book gets you past the guesswork straight to the fix. Bookmarked by section so you can jump from Trouble Shooting straight to Control Valve overhaul without flipping pages, this PDF opens on your phone, tablet, or shop laptop the moment you download it.}

Case 430 / 431 / 440 / 441 / 470 / 530 / 531 Common Problems This Manual Covers
J.I. Case 430 tractor experiencing excessive battery water consumption greater than 1 oz every 60 hours.
Test the electrical system using a multimeter across the battery posts. Verify the alternator output voltage reads between 14.5-14.7 Volts as specified on page 45. Replace the voltage regulator if the system is overcharging and boiling off the electrolyte fluid.
Manual Section: Electrical Units p. 45Engine runs unevenly and lacks power with loud ticking noises coming from the top end.
Remove the valve cover and inspect the rocker arms and cam followers. Adjust the valve tappet gap to exactly 0.014 C on page 4. Verify the 1-3-4-2 firing order is correct if the engine still misfires after setting the clearances.
Manual Section: Engine p. 4Draft-O-Matic hydraulic system fails to lift heavy implements with relief valve pressure dropping below 1450 PSI.
Connect a pressure test gage to the pump pressure line to check the output. Verify the hydraulic system maintains between 1450 PSI and 1550 PSI during operation. Adjust the adjusting plug located in the Hydra-sleuth adapter housing or replace the worn relief valve.
Manual Section: Hydraulic Lift SystemDiesel engine cranks slowly but fails to start or produces heavy knocking during irregular engine operation.
Check the main bearings for excessive wear or scoring. Verify your specific block uses either 3 or 5 main bearings as listed on page 4. Inspect the 4 cylinders for proper compression and bleed the fuel system to remove trapped air.
Manual Section: DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM Trouble Shooting p. 4Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for cylinder head stud nuts on J.I. Case 430 models?
For J.I. Case 430 non-diesel models, the cylinder head stud nuts should be tightened to a torque of 95-100 ft.-lbs. For 430 diesel models, the cylinder head stud nuts should also be tightened to 95-100 ft.-lbs., or 110-115 lbs. if capscrews are used, following the sequence shown in Fig. 41. p. 21
What are the replacement specifications for Transmission seals?
The manual instructs to renew oil seals in the carrier if their condition is questionable, and to install new seals with their lips outward and opposed. However, specific dimensions or material specifications for the transmission seals are not provided. p. 56
What are the replacement specifications for the Hydraulic system pump relief valve spring?
The relief valve spring (12) for the hydraulic system pump should have a free length of 1.083 inches and must test 62-68 lbs. when compressed to a height of ¾-inch. If the spring does not meet these specifications, it should be renewed. p. 33
What is the valve tappet gap adjustment for J.I. Case engines?
The valve tappet gap for J.I. Case engines should be adjusted to 0.014 inches cold. This specification is listed in the tune-up data and reiterated for both non-diesel and diesel models. p. 4
