This is the factory service manual for the Case 580SR, 580SR+, 590SR and 695SR Series 3 loader backhoes, covering both sideshift and center pivot versions. It walks through the torque converter, powershift transmission, front and rear axles, brakes, hydraulics, steering, cab with heating and air conditioning, electrics, loader and backhoe, with removal, disassembly, assembly and pressure test procedures for each. Torques are printed in Nm the way Case wrote them: 330 Nm front wheel nuts on 2WS, 700 Nm on 4WS, 500 Nm axle to frame. The engine itself lives in a separate Case Engine volume (Print No. 87659057A), so buy this book for everything from the flywheel back.

Case 580SR, 590SR Common Problems This Manual Covers

Hard gear selection, drive that slips under load or locks up and clashes when a range is selected

Trace it to a clutch pack holding pressure when deselected or not building pressure when selected. The Transmission section gives hydraulic clutch checks and pressure testing at each clutch feed so you condemn the right pack or spool before pulling the transmission out.

Manual Section: Transmission p. 156
Machine feels weak on the pile and transmission oil runs hot

Run the stall test from the Torque Converters section: lock the brakes, apply full accelerator and read maximum engine speed against spec. The result separates a tired converter from slipping Powershift clutches, and the section lists transmission oil temperature limits so you do not cook the oil proving it.

Manual Section: Torque Converters p. 65
Bucket, boom, dipper or stabilizer cylinder drifts down and will not hold position

Start with the relief valves, not the cylinder seals. A relief stuck open, set too low or leaking at the seat drops holding pressure on that circuit. The Hydraulic System section has pressure tests and adjustments, with hydraulic diagrams for each machine version, to isolate valve from cylinder in one afternoon.

Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 710
Whine or rumble from the front axle after hub or differential work

Almost always the mesh setup. The Front Axles section covers overhaul of the differential and epicyclic hubs and gives the adjustments and end float procedure, including setting pinion to ring gear backlash at 0.18-0.25 mm, so the gears run quiet instead of eating themselves within a season.

Manual Section: Front Axles p. 411

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this manual cover engine rebuilds on the 580SR or 590SR?

No. Case put the engine in a separate volume, Print No. 87659057A, and this book points you there. What you get here is everything bolted around the engine: torque converter, powershift transmission, axles, brakes, hydraulics, steering, cab, electrics, loader and backhoe. If your problem is inside the block, you need the engine book too. p. 3

My powershift slips in one direction or clashes going into gear. Will this book help me find out why?

Yes, and this is exactly the fault pattern the Transmission section works through. A forward or reverse clutch pack can stay pressurised when it should not, or fail to pressurise when selected, and the book gives hydraulic clutch checks and pressure testing to prove which pack is at fault before you split anything. The Torque Converters section adds the stall test: brakes locked, accelerator down, read maximum engine speed to judge converter and clutch condition. p. 82

Can I read fault codes on these machines with this manual?

The book gives the on board retrieval procedure: put the Powershift lever in neutral and press the kickdown button, and the instrument cluster brings up a detailed fault display. Be aware it does not print a code table, so you use the display procedure together with the fault finding charts in the transmission and electrical sections rather than looking up code numbers. p. 334

The loader bucket or a stabilizer leg drifts down while parked. Is that covered?

Covered in the Hydraulic System section. The usual culprit on these machines is a relief valve stuck open, set too low or leaking at its seat, which lets a bucket, boom, dipper or stabilizer cylinder lose its holding position. The manual gives pressure tests and adjustments per machine version so you can test the valve and the cylinder instead of guessing and swapping seals. p. 710

Are the torque figures and adjustment specs actually in here, or is it just descriptions?

The real numbers are in here, printed in Nm. Wheel nuts are 330 Nm front and 540 Nm rear on 2WS machines, 700 Nm all round on 4WS, front axle to frame bolts 500 Nm, torque converter drive plate bolts 53 Nm, and setup figures like front axle pinion to ring gear backlash at 0.18-0.25 mm. Note there are no lb-ft conversions, so keep a Nm torque wrench handy. p. 725
