Case 845, 865, 885 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 845 grader starter clicks but engine won't crank, battery reads full charge
Check battery voltage and clean both cable ends before condemning the starter. Test voltage drop across the solenoid contacts while cranking. If the starter is dead, pull it from the left side of the engine per the removal procedure on page 60 and torque the new mounting bolts to 41 to 74 Nm (30 to 54 pound-feet).
Manual Section: Electrical p. 60Alternator stopped charging, battery warning light stays on with engine at full operating speed
Check belt tension and the B+ terminal connection first; torque that nut to 15 to 27 Nm per page 61. If output is still dead, bench test the alternator: rotor resistance should read 8.1 to 9.9 ohms and brushes must measure at least 7 mm (0.27 inch), specs listed on page 104.
Manual Section: Electrical p. 104Blade drifts down during grading passes, hydraulic controls feel spongy and slow to respond
Inspect the moldboard lift cylinder fittings and hoses for weeping seals; a slow drip on the return side pulls air into the system. Retighten any leaking 37 degree flare fittings, a 3/8 inch line takes 14 to 34 Nm per the torque chart on page 16. Replace cracked O-rings before pressure testing the circuit.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 692Steering wheel hard to turn at idle, effort improves once engine speed comes up
Check tank line back pressure first; anything over 300 psi, the maximum listed on page 155, points to a restricted return line rather than the valve. If pressure checks good, pull the steering priority valve and inspect the spool for scoring, then torque the spool orifice screws to 7.3 to 9.6 Nm on reassembly per page 157.
Manual Section: Steering p. 155Air conditioner blows warm, compressor cycles on and off rapidly in hot weather
Check refrigerant charge; the system holds 1.6 kg of HFC 134A, spec on page 802. Rapid compressor cycling usually means low charge from a leaking hose or condenser seal. Recover what remains, pressure test with nitrogen, repair the leak, then evacuate and recharge to the full 1.6 kg capacity.
Manual Section: Mounted Equipment p. 802Frequently Asked Questions
