Wrestling with a grader transmission that shifts hard or slips under load? This 865-page Case 845, 865, 885 Service Manual PDF (OEM #6-46503) covers all three motor graders, with dedicated transmission teardown, pressure check, and diagnostic code sections for the 845-865 and the 885. You get complete electrical diagrams, hydraulic schematics with removal and installation procedures, plus full service coverage of steering valves, differential lock rear axles, tandem drives, brakes, and the air conditioning system. Troubleshooting charts walk you through clutch actuation, solenoid voltage checks, and suction leak tests. Torque the starter bolts to 41-74 Nm and set your 1/2-inch 37-degree flare fittings between 20 and 57 Newton metres. Forum threads won't rebuild a tandem Case. This scanned factory PDF is bookmarked by section; load it on any device, jump straight to the chapter, and get wrenching.

Case 845, 865, 885 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Case 845 grader starter clicks but engine won't crank, battery reads full charge

Check battery voltage and clean both cable ends before condemning the starter. Test voltage drop across the solenoid contacts while cranking. If the starter is dead, pull it from the left side of the engine per the removal procedure on page 60 and torque the new mounting bolts to 41 to 74 Nm (30 to 54 pound-feet).

Manual Section: Electrical p. 60
Alternator stopped charging, battery warning light stays on with engine at full operating speed

Check belt tension and the B+ terminal connection first; torque that nut to 15 to 27 Nm per page 61. If output is still dead, bench test the alternator: rotor resistance should read 8.1 to 9.9 ohms and brushes must measure at least 7 mm (0.27 inch), specs listed on page 104.

Manual Section: Electrical p. 104
Blade drifts down during grading passes, hydraulic controls feel spongy and slow to respond

Inspect the moldboard lift cylinder fittings and hoses for weeping seals; a slow drip on the return side pulls air into the system. Retighten any leaking 37 degree flare fittings, a 3/8 inch line takes 14 to 34 Nm per the torque chart on page 16. Replace cracked O-rings before pressure testing the circuit.

Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 692
Steering wheel hard to turn at idle, effort improves once engine speed comes up

Check tank line back pressure first; anything over 300 psi, the maximum listed on page 155, points to a restricted return line rather than the valve. If pressure checks good, pull the steering priority valve and inspect the spool for scoring, then torque the spool orifice screws to 7.3 to 9.6 Nm on reassembly per page 157.

Manual Section: Steering p. 155
Air conditioner blows warm, compressor cycles on and off rapidly in hot weather

Check refrigerant charge; the system holds 1.6 kg of HFC 134A, spec on page 802. Rapid compressor cycling usually means low charge from a leaking hose or condenser seal. Recover what remains, pressure test with nitrogen, repair the leak, then evacuate and recharge to the full 1.6 kg capacity.

Manual Section: Mounted Equipment p. 802

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the starter bolts on the Case 885 grader?

The starter bolts for the Case 885 grader should be torqued to 41 to 74 Nm (30 to 54 pound-feet). p. 60

What are the alternator mounting bolt torque specifications for the Case 845-885 graders?

The alternator mounting bolts for the Case 845-885 graders should be torqued to 60 to 104 Nm (42.5 to 76 pound-feet). p. 61

What is the engine oil capacity for a Case 845 grader with a filter change?
