Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
The hydraulic system is the hardest chapter on any self-propelled windrower, and this Case 8820, 8830 service manual PDF (OEM Rac 8-98071, 772 pages) gives grain and hay machines each their own complete circuit coverage before moving through engine, fuel, electrical, steering, power train, brakes, and chassis. Schematics trace the header lift, reel drive, and bypass valve circuits, with pressure tests and troubleshooting written for both versions. Hydrostatic ground drive gets the same treatment, charge pump through tandem pump to drive motors, and full wiring schematics cover both diesel and gasoline engines. Any time you open the hydraulic system, replace the return and charge filters within 50 hours; torque cylinder head bolts to 120 to 132 Nm on rebuild. Hay down and one missing pressure spec stalls everything. Bookmarked and text searchable, yours minutes after checkout, cutting again before the weather turns.

Case 8820, 8830 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 8820 sickle drive jackshaft broke at the bearing, front push bar bent, knife dead
Replace the jackshaft and both bearings as a set; a spun bearing has already worn the shaft journal. Tighten the slotted nut until end play is gone, then check preload: rolling torque for the jackshaft should read 2 to 3 LB-FT (2.7 to 4.0 N-m). Torque the jackshaft nut to 150 LB-FT (271 N-m), spec on page 759.
Manual Section: Chassis p. 759Hydraulic draper drive will not rotate or shifts erratically, belts creep then stall
Check electrical connections and the control cable plug at the shift valve before pulling anything apart, then feel for binding or crop buildup at the draper rollers. If the shift valve needs a rebuild, torque the spool caps to 20 to 25 LB-FT (27 to 34 N-m), values on page 604.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 604Hydraulic oil running hot and relief valve bypassing repeatedly during a full day of cutting
Check the reservoir oil level first; it holds 12 U.S. gallons (45 liters), spec on page 568. Replace the return and charge filters, and change them again after no more than 50 hours if the system was opened. Test the bypass valve poppet; it should move with 12 to 26 pounds force (53 to 116 N).
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 607Header raises slowly or will not raise at all even with engine at full throttle
Test the header lift circuit with a gauge; minimum pressure is 2250 psi (15 514 kPa), verified on page 605. If pressure comes up short, adjust the relief valve with shims (.010.015, and .039 IN thicknesses are available) and tighten the jam nut to 21 to 24 LB-FT (29 to 33 N-m) after setting it.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System p. 605Frequently Asked Questions
What is the torque specification for the engine head bolts on the 8820 and 8830 tractors?
The cylinder head bolts for the engine should be tightened to a torque of 120 to 132 Nm. p. 54
What is the procedure for replacing a sealed ball bearing on the tractor?
To replace a sealed ball bearing, loosen the set screw, use a drift punch to rotate and loosen the locking collar opposite the direction of shaft rotation, remove the collar, support the shaft, and remove the bearing flange bolts. When installing, ensure the bearing is straight within the flanges, tighten bolts evenly, and push the locking collar against the bearing inner ring, turning it in the direction of normal shaft rotation until engaged. p. 25
What is the correct tension for the governor drive belt?
The governor drive belt tension must be 1/4 inch (6.3 mm) at 8 pounds (3.6 kg) of force, measured at a point halfway between the pulleys. p. 255
What is the engine oil and filter change interval for the Case 8820, 8830 windrower tractor diesel engine?
The engine oil and oil filter on the diesel engine should be changed every 200 hours of operation. p. 23
How do I bleed air from the diesel fuel system?
To bleed air from the fuel system, loosen the vent screw on the filter head one to two turns, operate the hand primer pump until fuel flows without air, and tighten the vent screw. Then, loosen the two bleed screws on the side of the fuel injection pump, operate the hand primer pump until fuel flows without air, and tighten both bleed screws. p. 251
Do I get instant access to this Case 8820 Service Manual?
A single searchable PDF file of 772 pages, downloadable right after payment. Nothing ships, nothing waits in the mail.
Is printing allowed for this Case 8820 Service Manual?
Yes. No DRM, nothing blocks printing, so run off the pages you need on whatever printer you have.
