Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
A wheeled excavator that won't crank, or a brake pedal that goes soft on a slope, leaves a crew standing still. This is the Case factory repair manual for the 888P and 888P4A, printed in England. It covers the JI Case 6T-590 diesel, electrics, steering, axles, brakes, hydraulics, upperstructure and cab.
It gives you the factory figures, like 540 Nm (398 lb ft) on the wheel nuts and 205 litres (45.1 gallons) for the whole hydraulic system. A guessed torque or pressure figure is how a wheel works loose or a hose lets go under load.
Print the sections you need and take them to the bench. If oil gets on them, print them again.

Case 888P, 888P4A Common Problems This Manual Covers
Starter motor does not operate
Before you pull the starter, work back through its supply. Check the starter switch for loose or corroded connections. Check fuses F1 and F2. Then check relay K1 and relay K2 for loose or corroded connections.
Manual Section: Starter Motor (4003) p. 177Spongy brake pedal from air in the brake circuits
Air in the circuits gives you a soft pedal. With the engine running, operate the service brake pedal and bleed the left-hand and right-hand braking circuits. Open each bleed screw and wait until fluid flows out freely with no air bubbles.
Manual Section: Rear Axle (6005) p. 529Hydraulic oil level low
Check the indicator on the front of the hydraulic oil tank and top up until the oil sits between level 3 and level 5. The reservoir holds 130 litres (28.6 gallons). The total system capacity is 205 litres (45.1 gallons).
Manual Section: Front Axle (6004) p. 362No oil pressure on first start after an engine rebuild
Don't let a fresh engine fire dry. Disconnect the wire to the electric shut-off on the injection pump so the engine cannot start. Crank it for 30 seconds until there is oil pressure, then reconnect the wire.
Manual Section: Specifications (1002) - Running-In Instructions p. 24Frequently Asked Questions
What engine is in the Case 888P excavator?
It runs the JI Case 6T-590 diesel. Bore and stroke are 102 mm x 120 mm and piston displacement is 5880 cm3. The compression ratio is 17.5 to 1. p. 26
How much engine oil does the Case 888P take?
It takes 15.4 litres (16 US quarts) of engine oil with a filter change. Fill to that figure, not to whatever the last owner guessed. p. 26
What is the wheel nut torque on a Case 888P?
Fit the outer wheels to the axle and run the nuts on. Then torque them to 540 Nm (398 lb ft). On a machine that travels on the road, having that figure in writing is a good reason to own the book. p. 362
How do I check the hydraulic oil level on a Case 888P?
Read the indicator on the front of the hydraulic oil tank. The oil must sit between level 3 and level 5. The reservoir holds 130 litres (28.6 gallons) and the full system takes 205 litres (45.1 gallons). p. 362
How do I bleed the brakes on a Case 888P?
Start the engine and operate the service brake pedal. Bleed the left-hand and right-hand braking circuits separately. Open the bleed screw and wait until fluid flows out freely with no air bubbles. p. 529
