The D-179 won't fire after a filter change, or the hydraulic oil level keeps dropping and you can't see where it's going. This factory Case service manual covers the 380B industrial tractor. Many sections are shared with the Case 85 Series ag tractors.

It covers the engine, the fuel system with the Bosch VE and VA injection pumps, electrical, steering and front axle, power train, brakes and hydraulics. Separate chapters explain how the hydrostatic steering and the tractor hydraulic system work.

Most jobs don't stall on the wrenching. They stall with the head torqued to the second stage and nobody sure of the final figure. The specs are in the book, down to injector opening pressure and pump timing. Look up the number, finish the job and get back in the field.

Case 380B Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine cranks slowly or will not turn over fast enough to start

Bring the battery to a full charge and make sure the cable clamps are clean and tight. The starter motor must crank the engine at 200 to 300 RPM. Check the amperage the starter motor draws. That reading can show damage in the batteries, cables, solenoid or starter motor. The procedure is in the Electrical section under battery servicing and testing and starting motor.

Manual Section: Electrical - Battery Servicing and Testing / Starting Motor p. 94
Voltmeter reads zero at the solenoid battery terminal

To test the solenoid switch, connect a voltmeter between the battery terminal (30) and a good ground. A zero reading means a loose or corroded cable connection. Clean and tighten the connection before you condemn the solenoid or pull the starter. The test is covered in the Electrical section under the starting motor.

Manual Section: Electrical - Starting Motor p. 629
Hydraulic oil level drops after the engine has run

Let the tractor stand at rest for at least one hour and check the static level. Then run the engine at 1600 RPM for three minutes and recheck. If the level falls, confirm the rubber plug is in place. Next, inspect the lubricant transfer pump screen. If it is blocked, clean it and repair the source of contamination. This is covered in the Hydraulics section with the troubleshooting flow charts.

Manual Section: Hydraulics - Hydraulic Troubleshooting Flow Charts / Filter and Pump p. 1316
Air or dirt in the fuel system after a filter change or running dry

The fuel system must always be free of air and dirt. The filters stop dirt and water from reaching the injection components, so a neglected or badly fitted filter puts the Bosch pump and injectors at risk. Filter service and the air removal procedure are in the Fuel System section under fuel filters and air removal.

Manual Section: Fuel System - Fuel Filters and Air Removal p. 348

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine is in the Case 380B tractor?

The 380B uses the D-179 three cylinder diesel. It's the same engine type as in the Case 485 and 248, so most of the engine and fuel specs carry across all three. p. 70

What is the injection pump timing on a Case 380B?

First find out which Bosch pump you have. The VE type pump (EP/VE3/10F 1090 R276-2) times statically at 8 degrees BTC, with 0.039 inch (1.0 mm) of plunger travel at that point. Total plunger travel is 0.086 to 0.087 inch (2.19 to 2.21 mm). The VA type pump (EP/VA3/10H 1090 CR 43-3) times statically at 14 degrees BTC. It starts to advance at 800 RPM and reaches 26 degrees BTC total advance. The injectors use a Bosch DLLA 150S 836 nozzle that opens at 3263 to 3379 PSI (22.5 to 23.3 MPa). p. 71

How much oil does the 380B transmission case hold?

Without MFD, the transmission case holds 36 quarts (34 litres). With MFD it holds 38.6 quarts (36.5 litres). Both use HY-TRAN fluid. Check whether your tractor has MFD before you open the drums. p. 81

Why does my 380B crank slowly or not start?

Before you chase anything, make sure the battery has a full charge and the cable clamps are clean and tight. The starter has to crank the engine at 200 to 300 RPM. Measure the amperage the starter motor draws. That reading can point to damage in the batteries, cables, solenoid or starter motor. To test the solenoid, connect a voltmeter between the battery terminal (30) and a good ground. If it reads zero, look for a loose or corroded cable connection. p. 94

Why does the hydraulic oil level drop on my 380B?

Let the tractor stand at rest for at least one hour, then check the static level. Run the engine at 1600 RPM for three minutes and check again. If the level drops, make sure the rubber plug is in place. Then check the lubricant transfer pump screen. If the screen is blocked, clean it and repair whatever is contaminating the oil. A blocked screen will come back if the contamination source isn't fixed. p. 1316
