Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Covers the Case 4894 four-wheel-drive tractor built in 1985 and 1986. That means the 674 cubic inch six cylinder turbo diesel, the 12 speed power shift and electronic four wheel steering. If that tractor is parked in your shed, this factory book fits it.
Guessing on a big 4WD gets expensive fast. You might buy a steering sensor you didn't need, or pull the power shift a second time. You might condemn an engine when the real trouble was drag in the drivetrain. Case wrote these sections for their own dealer techs, with test procedures, wiring diagrams and specs laid out system by system.
You get engine overhaul, the Bosch injection pump, the power shift and planetaries, the triple hydraulic pump, the electronic hitch, the remote valves and the air conditioner. Find the fault, fix it once, and get back in the field before the weather turns.

Case 4894 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Engine stops about 30 seconds after a cold start
At 32 F (0 C) or below, the automatic shutdown kit stops the engine after 30 seconds if engine or transmission oil pressure hasn't reached safe switch operating pressure in that time. Turn the key switch OFF and then ON quickly to reset the system for another 30 seconds.
Manual Section: Electrical p. 1847Erratic voltage reading from the front steering sensor
Follow the front sensor test in the electronic four wheel steering section. Turn the steering wheel slowly from the LH stop to the RH stop. Voltage must climb steadily from about 3.5 to 4.5 volts. If it's erratic, check that the set screw and mounting bolts are tight. If they are tight, replace the front sensor.
Manual Section: Steering: electronic four wheel steering testing and alignment p. 639Engine is down on power and running hotter than normal
The engine troubleshooting charts list mechanical drag on the tractor as a cause of both low horsepower and above normal engine temperature. Look for drag in the drivetrain before you pull the engine apart or start swapping fuel system parts.
Manual Section: Engines: engine troubleshooting p. 125Not sure how much fluid the transmission hydraulic system takes on refill
The refill depends on how the tractor is equipped. A tractor without PTO and hitch takes 46 quarts (43.5 litres) of Case Powergard PTF. A tractor with PTO and hitch takes 48 quarts (45.4 litres) of the same fluid.
Manual Section: Specifications: lubrication specifications p. 35Frequently Asked Questions
What engine is in the Case 4894?
It's a six cylinder, four stroke cycle turbocharged diesel with the valves in the cylinder head, displacing 674 cubic inches (11 045 cm³). Bore is 5 inches (127 mm) and compression ratio is 15 to 1. Firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4. Rated speed is 2200 RPM, idle is 750 RPM, and governed speed without load is 2400 to 2500 RPM. p. 7
How much oil does the Case 4894 engine hold?
The crankcase takes 28.4 quarts (27 litres). Once it's refilled, check the gauge with the engine warm and running at rated speed. Oil pressure should read 65 to 87 PSI (448 to 600 kPa). p. 35
How big are the fuel tanks on a Case 4894?
Each tank holds 75 gallons (284 litres). The book calls for a good grade of number 2 diesel fuel. p. 35
Why does my Case 4894 shut down about 30 seconds after a cold start?
The automatic shutdown kit is doing its job. At 32 F (0 C) or colder, it stops the engine after 30 seconds if engine or transmission oil pressure hasn't reached safe switch operating pressure. To keep it running, turn the key switch OFF and then back ON quickly. That resets the system for another 30 seconds. p. 1847
What do I check if the steering sensor voltage is erratic on a 4894?
Put a meter on the front sensor and turn the steering wheel slowly from the LH stop to the RH stop. Voltage must rise steadily from about 3.5 to 4.5 volts. If the reading jumps around, make sure the sensor set screw and mounting bolts are tight. If they are already tight, replace the front sensor. p. 639
