This is the factory Case IH service and repair manual for the 6TAA-8304 (8.3 L) and 6TAA-9004 (8.9 L) six-cylinder turbocharged, air-to-air aftercooled diesel engines - the Case IH-badged Cummins 6C platform fitted to 2377 and 2388 combines and Magnum 225, 250, 280, 310 and STX280/STX330 tractors. Across 966 pages it covers the complete engine: block, crankshaft, pistons and rods, cylinder head and valve train, the fuel injection and air intake systems, cooling with wet-sleeve and DCA coolant-additive service, lubrication, exhaust and starting. You get the real factory service limits, clearances, valve lash and tightening torques needed for a full teardown, measurement and rebuild.

Case IH 6TAA-8304 / 6TAA-9004 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Coolant in the crankcase or sleeve pitting from wet-sleeve cavitation

Test and maintain the DCA/SCA coolant additive at the specified concentration on schedule; a weak additive lets cavitation pit the wet sleeves until they seep. Follow the manual coolant-system procedure to check the additive, flush and refill correctly, and inspect the sleeves for pitting before it becomes a leak into the crankcase.

Manual Section: Engine Coolant System (B.50.A)
Rod or block failure at high hours in hard-worked combine duty

Do not reassemble on worn tolerances after high-hour service. Use the manual service limits to measure connecting-rod bearing clearance, crankshaft side clearance and piston-to-bore fit during any rebuild, replace bearings and rings that fall outside the published limits, and torque the rotating assembly to spec so a marginal rod does not let go under load.

Manual Section: Engine (B.10.A)
Overheating under load from restricted or dirty cooling

Keep the cooling package clean and verify flow before blaming the engine. The manual covers water-pump, thermostat and radiator service plus the coolant-additive checks; work through those, clear chaff and debris from the cores, and confirm the thermostat opens fully so the engine holds temperature during heavy field work.

Manual Section: Engine Coolant System (B.50.A)
Cracked or warped exhaust manifold from heat cycling

Inspect the manifold for cracks and flatness at any exhaust or turbo service. The manual exhaust-system section gives the removal, inspection and reinstallation steps; replace a cracked manifold, use fresh gaskets, and follow the tightening sequence so a warped face does not leak and burn the next gasket.

Manual Section: Exhaust System (B.40.A)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the valve lash setting for the Case IH 6TAA-8304 / 6TAA-9004 engine?

Set the valves cold to 0.305 mm (0.012 in) on the intake and 0.559 mm (0.022 in) on the exhaust. The manual gives the full overhead-adjustment procedure, the crank positions for each cylinder in firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4, and the check limits so you can confirm the lash stays in tolerance after the rocker cap screws are torqued to 65 Nm (48 lb ft).

Why does this 8.3L engine get wet-sleeve cavitation and how do I prevent it?

These wet-sleeve engines rely on the correct level of DCA/SCA coolant additive. When the additive drops, the coolant lets tiny bubbles pit the outside of the cylinder sleeves until they leak into the crankcase. The manual's coolant-system section covers testing the additive concentration, the service interval, and the sleeve inspection so you catch pitting before a sleeve fails.

How do I tell the 6TAA-8304 apart from the 6TAA-9004?

Both share the same 114 mm bore and six-cylinder turbo-aftercooled layout, but the 6TAA-8304 is the 8.3 L (504.5 in3) engine with a 135 mm stroke, while the 6TAA-9004 is the longer-stroke 8.9 L (540 in3) version at 144.5 mm. Confirm the exact rating on the engine dataplate, since horsepower is set by the application (combine vs Magnum/STX tractor).

Which machines use these engines?

The 6TAA-8304 and 6TAA-9004 are fitted to Case IH 2377 and 2388 combines and to Magnum 225, 250, 280 and 310 tractors plus the STX280 and STX330. This one repair manual covers the engine itself, so it applies across all of those machines regardless of chassis.
