Ford 1100–1900 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Engine does not develop full power

Follow the engine troubleshooting chart. Check the air cleaner and fuel line for clogs. Next, check injection timing, nozzle injection pressure and angle, and fuel delivery in the diesel fuel system chapter. If the fuel side checks out, test compression for worn or sticking rings, a blown head gasket, or burned, worn or sticking valves. Then check the valve lash adjustment.

Manual Section: Engine - Troubleshooting p. 98
Clutch slipping

Check pedal free travel first and set it with the clutch adjustment procedure. If it still slips, the disc facings are probably worn and the disc needs replacing. If the pressure springs have gone weak from overheating, overhaul the clutch or fit a new clutch assembly. The clutch overhaul section covers the teardown and rebuild.

Manual Section: Clutch - Troubleshooting p. 293
Insufficient braking

Adjust the pedal play first using the brake adjustment procedure. If the pedal is set right and the tractor still won't hold, open the brake and inspect the lining. Worn or burnt lining means new brake shoes. Oil in the brake chamber means a leaking oil seal. Replace the oil seal.

Manual Section: Rear axle and brakes - Troubleshooting p. 355
Implement will not lift with the lever in lift position

First check that the implement weight is not over the tractor's maximum lift capacity. If the weight is fine, check whether the hydraulic oil pump is delivering, and repair or replace it if not. If relief valve pressure is low, adjust it. On the 1100, set it with the engine at high speed and the lever at the highest lifting position until the gauge reads 1849 psi (130 kg/cm2).

Manual Section: Repair manual supplement - Trouble shooting guide p. 13

Frequently Asked Questions

Which engines do the Ford 1300, 1500, 1700 and 1900 tractors use?

The spec table lists the LEK802D for the 1300, LET852C for the 1500, LE892 for the 1700 and LEM853 for the 1900. The 1300, 1500 and 1700 are two-cylinder engines, and the 1900 has three. Displacement runs 49.1 in.3 (804cc), 69.2 in.3 (1,134cc), 77.7 in.3 (1,272cc) and 82.7 in.3 (1,429cc), in that order. Rated speeds are 2700, 2500, 2500 and 2800 rpm. The 1100 runs the LEK 752C, two cylinders, 43.1 cu. in. (706cc), rated at 2600 rpm. p. 620

How much coolant do the Ford 1300, 1500, 1700 and 1900 take?

The 1300 takes 4.0 liters (4.2 qts US, 3.5 qts Imp). The 1500 and 1700 share the same figure, 5.3 liters (5.6 qts US, 4.6 qts Imp). The 1900 holds 6 liters (6.3 qts US, 5.2 qts Imp). If the level keeps dropping, the cooling chapter covers overheating diagnosis and the cooling system tests. p. 669

What are the connecting rod cap bolt torques on the Ford 1300 to 1900?

They differ across the line, so confirm the model before you set the wrench. The 1300 gets 17-20 lbs.-ft. (25-28 N-m). The 1500 and 1700 get 57-61 lbs.-ft. (80-85 N-m). The 1900 gets 32-36 lbs.-ft. (45-50 N-m). p. 603

What is the hydraulic relief valve setting and hydraulic oil on the Ford 1100?

Run the engine at high speed and put the control lever at the highest lifting position. Turn the adjuster screw until the gauge reads 1849 psi (130 kg/cm2). The oil is Ford M2C-53-A. p. 382

What clutch does each model use?

The 1300, 1500 and 1700 use one clutch plate with two facings. The 1900 came with either a single clutch or a dual clutch with two plates. Facing outside diameter is 7.09 in. (180mm) on the 1300 and 8.50 in. (216mm) on the 1500, 1700 and 1900. p. 866
