Shuttling between ranges, engaging four-wheel drive, and getting the PTO to spin an implement without grinding anything is where a compact diesel catches you out, and this Ford 1500 and F-1500 operator manual PDF, factory publication 42150011, walks all of it across 56 pages. Lubrication and maintenance takes up over a third of the book, with separate service charts for two-wheel and four-wheel drive tractors, fuel and lubricant procedures, and storage prep. Controls, instruments, break-in, differential lock operation, wheel tread settings, ballasting, and the predelivery and 50-hour service checks fill out the rest. Clean your fuel filter every 100 hours and change it at 200; hold brake pedal free play between 19 and 30 mm. Guessing a wheel torque figure is how discs crack and studs shear. Bookmarked and text-searchable, the PDF rides in the cab or on the shop bench, so the specs sit wherever your 1500 is working.

Ford 1500 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Ford 1500 three-point hitch lifts slowly, chatters under load, or won't raise the implement at all

Check the transaxle oil level with the tractor on level ground and the hitch lowered. Change the hydraulic system filter every 600 hours as listed on page 29; a plugged filter starves the pump and the lift is the first thing to fade. Follow the maintenance chart on page 22 if the oil looks dark or milky.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 29
Engine cranks slowly or won't fire on cold mornings, needs several tries before it starts

Follow the cold weather starting procedure on page 14 and use the cold start aid instead of ether. Load test the battery; the specifications section starting on page 41 calls for a 12-volt, 70 amp hour unit. Clean and tighten both cable ends, and charge or replace a weak battery before morning chores, not after it strands you.

Manual Section: Operation p. 14
One brake pedal goes weak or grabs late, tractor pulls to one side when stopping

Check brake pedal free travel on both pedals before blaming the linings. Rotate each brake rod until the pedal shows 3/4 to 1-3/16 in. (19-30 mm) of free play, the adjustment on page 39, and set both sides even so the tractor stops straight. If one pedal still fades, have that side's brake hardware inspected before hauling loaded wagons downhill.

Manual Section: Brake Adjustment
Engine surges, loses power, or dies in the field after running the fuel tank low

Clean the fuel filter every 100 hours by rinsing it in clean diesel, and replace it every 200 hours as scheduled on page 25. If the tank ran dry, refill and bleed the fuel system completely before any extended cranking. Keep the tank full overnight during harvest to cut condensation in the fuel.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 25
PTO grinds going into gear or won't engage, clutch pedal feels loose at the top

Push the clutch pedal all the way down and let the PTO shaft coast to a stop before moving the lever, following the operating procedure on page 14. Measure clutch pedal free travel and adjust the linkage to hold 3/4 to 1-3/16 in. (19-30 mm); too much play keeps the clutch from fully releasing and the PTO grinds.
