You are under the back wheel with a torque wrench, half a field left to work, and the only number that matters is the one for the rear disc to hub nuts. This Ford operator manual, publication 42561032, puts it on page 48 and gets you off the ground.

It runs 104 pages across the 5610, 6610 and 7610: controls and instruments, starting and stopping the engine, transmission and P.T.O. operation, the differential lock, the hydraulic lift system, lift linkage and drawbar, wheel tread settings and tractor weighting. Lubrication and Maintenance carries the service chart, fuels and lubricants, and the service procedures you work through between seasons.

With it you set front wheel toe-in, bleed the injection system after a fuel filter change, check clutch pedal free travel, confirm ROPS bolt torque and pull capacities straight from the Specifications pages, instead of parking the tractor until the dealer can look at it.

Ford 5610, 6610, 7610 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Clutch slipping under load

A 6610 that pulls fine on the road but slips hauling a loaded wagon usually has lost pedal free travel as the linings wear. Lubrication and Maintenance gives the check and adjustment, with free travel set to 1-1/8 to 1-3/8 inches (28.6-34.9 mm).

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 85
Hard starting after fuel filter change

Air trapped in the lines leaves the engine cranking and not catching, which always seems to happen the morning you need it. The bleeding procedure runs you from the filters out to the injector line fittings, which are tightened to 20 lbs. ft. (27 Nm) once air-free fuel flows.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 61
Three-point hitch lifts slowly or sags

Weak or slow lift with a heavy mounted implement points at the hydraulic supply before it points at the cylinder. The Specifications pages list the hydraulic system relief valve setting of 2500 psi, so you know what the system is supposed to make before you start pulling the lift cover.

Manual Section: Specifications p. 93
Front axle wander and tire wear

The front axle is a known weak point on these tractors, and scrubbed front tires with vague steering usually trace back to toe-in drifting out after bushing and tie rod wear. Toe-in is set to 1/4 to 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) in the maintenance procedures.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 84
Wheel nuts working loose

Rear wheels reset for a different row spacing will loosen and elongate the stud holes if the nuts go back on by feel. The wheel tread settings pages give the torques directly: 320 lb. ft. (434 Nm) rear disc to hub, 240 lb. ft. (325 Nm) front disc to hub, and 130 lb. ft. (176 Nm) disc to rim front and rear.

Manual Section: Operation p. 48
Differential lock will not release

A diff lock that stays engaged after the pedal is off makes the tractor fight you at every headland turn and loads the final drives. The Operation section covers correct engagement and release along with the conditions the lock should never be used in.

Manual Section: Operation p. 27
ROPS bolts loose after field work

Vibration in rough ground backs off the rollover protection mounting hardware, and a loose ROPS is no protection at all. The maintenance procedures have you check these bolts and tighten them to 180-220 lb. ft. if they have moved.

Manual Section: Lubrication and Maintenance p. 73
