From cylinder head to backhoe boom, this Ford 6500, 7500 service manual PDF (OEM ID 40650020) walks the engine, fuel, electrical, transmission, rear axle and brakes, steering, and loader-backhoe hydraulic systems end to end across 490 pages. Hydraulic schematics map the loader and backhoe circuits for each tractor, and the pressure checks and adjustments that keep those circuits honest fill much of the back half of the book. Wiring diagrams trace your lights, instruments, and starting system, while exploded views break rear axle assemblies like the planetary gears and differential lock down fastener by fastener. When the converter housing goes back on the transmission case, run the 5/8 in. bolts to 150-165 lbs. ft.; the alternator pulley nut takes 35-50 lbs. ft. A backhoe that drifts under load will not diagnose itself. Bookmarked and text-searchable, this PDF jumps you straight to the section you came for.

Ford 6500, 7500 Common Problems This Manual Covers

Loader and backhoe weak or sticky when cold, work normally after warm-up

Drain the reservoir and refill with clean oil; milky fluid means water is freezing in the spool bores overnight. Pull the sticky spool, polish off varnish with crocus cloth, and fit new seals. On the 6500, torque the spool eyelet end to 5-8 lbs. ft. (.69-1.1 kgm), page 382.

Manual Section: Ford 6500 Loader-Backhoe and Hydraulics p. 382
Engine hard to start, runs rough at idle, and lacks power under full load

Check that fuel reaches the injection pump and bleed the filters and lines, following the fuel system section starting on page 75. Verify governed speeds against page 65: 2100 rpm rated and 600-700 rpm low idle. If speeds are correct but power is still down, work the low power chart.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting
Loader boom or backhoe bucket drops as soon as the control lever is released

Cap the lines at the drooping cylinder with the load raised: if the rod still creeps, replace the piston seals; if it holds, the valve section is bypassing internally. On the 6500, torque loader lift cylinder gland nuts to 200-225 lbs. ft. (27.6-31.5 kgm) during reassembly, page 382; 7500 values start on page 385.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the torque specification for the front axle attaching bolts on the Ford 6500 and 7500?

The torque specification for the front axle attaching bolts is 57-74 lbs. ft. (7.86-10.21 kgm). p. 257

How do you fix ford 6500 backhoe no hydraulics after hose burst and refill, pump won't build pressure?

Fill the reservoir and crack the pump pressure line to bleed air, then crank until oil runs solid. If the pump still won't prime, pull it and bench check the drive shaft: it should turn freely at no more than 5-10 lbs. ft. (.69-1.3 kgm), per the pump procedure on page 348. Replace scored gear plates before reinstalling. p. 348

How do you fix tractor will not move forward or reverse and all hydraulic functions are dead?

Pull the converter housing inspection cover and turn the engine over by hand: if the flywheel spins but the pump drive gears don't, the drive ring or coupling has stripped. Split the housing per the transmission section, then torque the replacement transmission and equipment pump drive gear cap screws to 49-54 lbs. ft. (6.78-7.47 kgm), page 172. p. 172

How do you fix loader boom or backhoe bucket drops as soon as the control lever is released?

On the 6500, torque loader lift cylinder gland nuts to 200-225 lbs. ft. (27.6-31.5 kgm) during reassembly, page 382; 7500 values start on page 385. p. 382
