Hydrostatic drive, main gearbox, conditioner rolls, sickle drive, and reel: the New Holland 499 service manual PDF (OEM 40049910) takes each system on the Pivot Tongue Haybine Mower-Conditioner from removal through reassembly across 48 pages. Hydraulic schematics map the pump, relief valve, motor, and tongue reservoir circuit, so you can trace where pressure is going before you pull a single line. Cylinder rebuilds get the same treatment: swing, master, and slave, each stripped and reassembled with inspection checks that tell you whether seals or bores are at fault. Set the relief valve at 3500 psi, fill the reservoir with 20 gallons (75.7 L) of oil, and torque the gearbox attaching bolts to 70 to 80 ft. lbs. Nobody around still works on these. It's you, the machine, and this bookmarked, text-searchable PDF; print the pages that matter and let them take grease on the bench.

New Holland 499 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland 499 haybine sickle drive knocking, knife head rattles louder as engine speed comes up

Check the rubber bushing in the knife head first; a worn one knocks at any speed. Pull the connecting rod per the procedure on page 37 and inspect the crank pin bearings. Seat the crank pin nut at 35 ft. lbs. (48 N·m), then torque the knife head and connecting rod bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 N·m).

Manual Section: Connecting Rod Repair p. 37
Ragged cut and plugging in damp or fine-stemmed hay, cutterbar streaks and feeds unevenly

Replace dull or cracked knife sections and straighten or replace bent guards; damp crop shows cutterbar wear first. Check knife hold-down clearance, then inspect the sickle drive gearbox mounting on page 36: torque 1/2 inch bolts to 115 ft. lbs. (156 N·m) and 5/8 inch bolts to 200 ft. lbs. (271 N·m). A loose gearbox shortens knife stroke and leaves streaks.

Manual Section: Sickle Drive Gearbox Repair p. 32
Header will not lift and tongue swings slowly or drifts out of position under load

Check the tongue reservoir oil level; the system holds about 20 gallons (75.7 L) at the proper level. Verify relief valve pressure reaches 3500 psi (24,133 kPa) using the troubleshooting chart on page 4. If a cylinder drifts with good pressure, rebuild it per the procedures starting on page 19 and torque the rod nut to 250 ft. lbs. (339 N·m).

Manual Section: Hydraulic Cylinder Repair p. 19
Hydrostatic drive loses power or slows down in one direction after the oil warms up

Check oil level and change the filter before pulling anything apart. Measure pump and motor case drain flow as described on page 5; anything over 2 gallons per minute means worn internals. Confirm the relief valve holds 3500 psi (24,133 kPa) per page 4 before condemning the pump or motor.

Manual Section: Hydrostatic System Troubleshooting p. 4
Reel wobbles and tine bars clunk on every rotation, tines drag crop instead of feeding it

Inspect the tine bar bearings for play; a worn bearing lets the bar climb and drop each turn. Replace them per the procedure starting on page 40, torque the four mounting bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N·m) and the bearing nuts to 150 ft. lbs. (203 N·m). Check the reel cams and bushings while the reel is apart.
