Factory document 604.66.091.00, the New Holland BB940 repair manual PDF, strips seven big baler variants down to bare frames across 785 pages, covering the BB940 and BB960 families in S, P and R trims. Wiring diagrams trace every circuit through the electrical section, the largest single block in the book, while hydraulic schematics map the bale density, pickup lifting, blade control and bale ejector circuits. Knotter timing, plunger and connecting rod work, main gearbox teardown and PTO driveshaft repair each carry full procedures, backed by troubleshooting charts and error code tables. Check density circuit pressure against the 0 to 185 bar factory range, then set roller chain tension to 20 mm of deflection under 100 N of force. A parked baler burns daylight you will never get back. Bookmarked and text searchable, this PDF rides on whatever screen you carry to the field.

New Holland BB940, BB960 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland BB940 knotter misties, twine slips off the knot, short or missing pigtails

Check twine tension first; the lower twine run should pull at 12 to 14 kg per the spec on page 655. Inspect the billhook for nicks and dress or replace it. Then verify knotter frame preload: each knotter should take 67 to 98 N·m (15 to 22 ft. lbs.) to swing upward, page 653. A good knot leaves a 15 mm pigtail.

Manual Section: Knotter Troubleshooting p. 655
Needles hitting the plunger or bale out of time after knotter drive shear bolt break

Replace the shear bolt only after resetting timing; never just bolt it back together. Turn the flywheel by hand and verify the needle tips reach 0 to 40 mm from the plunger tip as shown on page 748, with needle tip overlap of 5 to 10 mm per page 750. Check both needles for cracks before the next field run.

Manual Section: Tying/Wrapping p. 748
Density system will not build pressure, bales come out soft and inconsistent

Check the density circuit troubleshooting steps before pulling cylinders. Verify the circuit ramps from 0 to 185 bar (0 to 2680 psi); if it never climbs, test the proportional solenoid coil and its wiring. Inspect the 3.8 cc/rev pump for wear, then torque the solenoid valve fittings to 40 to 45 Nm and 65 to 70 Nm per page 143.

Manual Section: Bale Density Circuit Troubleshooting
Stuffer drive shear bolt breaks repeatedly in heavy windrows, bales come out mis-shaped

Check the stuffer troubleshooting chart on page 525 before throwing another bolt at it. Verify the charge holding fingers retract 10 mm (3/8 inch) and confirm each compressed flake runs about 7 cm thick; fat flakes overload the stuffer. If the drive shaft has been apart, torque the installation bolts to 50 to 60 N·m per page 541.

Manual Section: Stuffer Troubleshooting p. 525
Packer forks knocking with excessive play, feeder clutch slips in heavy hay

Measure packer fork bearing clearance and replace the bearings once play exceeds 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) per page 501. Verify the packer slip clutch is set to 2100 N·m (1550 ft. lbs.) on the same page. While the shields are off, check drive chain tension: 20 mm (3/4 inch) deflection under a 100 N pull, page 451.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the torque specification for the wheel nuts on a New Holland BB940 baler?

The wheel nuts on a New Holland BB940 baler must be tightened to 300 Nm (220 ft.lbs). p. 122

What is the correct procedure to adjust the knotter frame preload?

Attach a spring scale to the knotter frame pinhole. Each knotter should swing upward with a force of 67 - 98 N-m (15 - 22 lbs.). If the force is incorrect, adjust the right-hand (3rd) expanding ring set by removing the holding wire and rotating the rings one notch at a time. p. 726

What is the required clearance for the twine finger to needle adjustment on a New Holland BB940, BB960 Big Baler?

The clearance between the twine finger and the needle should be 2 - 3 mm (1/16 - 1/8") when the twine fingers are passing the needles. Adjust the twine finger mounting forward or rearward as necessary to achieve this. p. 751

How do I adjust the stuffer brake on a New Holland BB940 baler?

The stuffer brake spring length is initially set at 35 mm (1-3/8"). If the stuffer fork does not remain steady in the home position, increase the spring setting by tightening the adjusting nuts (Figure 98) half a turn. If the clutch overheats, reduce the spring setting by loosening the nuts half a turn. p. 565

What is the correct oil specification for the main drive gearbox on a New Holland BB940, BB960 big baler?

The main drive gearbox requires 20 liters (5.3 US gal) of AMBRA HYPOIDE 140 (ref. NH524A) oil, which meets API-GL5 and MIL-L-2105 D specifications. p. 208
