Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
This is the factory repair manual for the New Holland E70 hydraulic crawler excavator. It is a Kobelco-lineage workshop manual, so it is organised by chapter number rather than by a walk around the machine: specifications and maintenance standards first, then the Mechatro control system, the hydraulic and electrical systems, the components, the upper slewing body and travel system, four separate troubleshooting chapters, a complete Isuzu A-4JG1 engine service chapter, and finally breaker and nibbler mounting.

New Holland E70 Common Problems This Manual Covers
The machine is slow on a function and you cannot tell whether it is the pump, the valve or the controller.
Take the route the manual gives you. Chapter 13 sets out the maintenance standards and the performance test procedures, so you measure against a number first. If the numbers are off, chapter 42 handles hydraulic troubleshooting and chapter 41 the Mechatro control side, and they lead to different components: the Mechatro controller commands the pump regulator, so a controller fault and a worn pump look identical from the seat.
Manual Section: Chapter 13 - Maintenance Standard and Test ProcedureThe engine is down on power or will not hold speed.
Start in chapter 44, the engine troubleshooting route, then move into chapter 51 for the actual work. Rated output is 40.5 kW at 2000 rpm and maximum torque 187 Nm at 1800 rpm, so a machine that pulls fine at low revs but dies at rated speed behaves differently from one that never makes torque. The engine chapter carries the compression figures, the clearances and the full Isuzu A-4JG1 overhaul.
Manual Section: Chapter 44 - Troubleshooting (Engine)One track is slower than the other, or the machine will not climb what it used to.
Check the numbers before you strip the final drive. Travel speed should be 3.1 and 5.5 km/h on iron shoes or 3.2 and 5.5 km/h on rubber, in low and high range, and the machine is rated for a 70 percent (35 degree) grade. The travel motor is a 2-speed axial piston unit, so a machine stuck in one range is a control or a solenoid fault rather than a worn motor. Chapter 34 covers the travel system and undercarriage.

Which engine is in the E70 and what does it make?
An Isuzu CC-4JG1, or the 4JG1NABGA on EU-specification machines. It is a water-cooled four-cycle direct-injection four-cylinder of 3059 cc (187 cu in), with a 95.4 mm bore and a 107 mm stroke, rated at 40.5 kW at 2000 rpm (55 PS at 2100 rpm) and making 187 Nm (138 ft lbs) at 1800 rpm.
Is the engine itself covered or just its installation?
Fully covered. Chapter 51 is a complete Isuzu A-4JG1 engine service chapter running from page 726 to page 955, with specifications and clearances, the cylinder head and valve train, the pistons and crankshaft, the fuel and lubrication systems and the full overhaul. That is unusual for an excavator manual and it is the single best reason to have this book.
How is troubleshooting organised?
Four separate chapters, one per system: Mechatro control at 646, hydraulic at 658, electric at 684 and engine at 708. Each takes a different route into the same machine, so you start from whichever side the symptom presents on rather than working through one generic list.
What are the hydraulic and travel specifications?
The pump is a variable displacement axial piston pump with a gear pump, feeding a 6-spool control valve plus a separate 1-spool dozer valve. The swing motor is an axial piston type and the travel motor a 2-speed axial piston type. Swing speed is 12.5 rpm, or 11.5 rpm on EU-specification machines. Travel speed is 3.1 and 5.5 km/h on iron shoes, 3.2 and 5.5 km/h on rubber. Gradeability is 70 percent, or 35 degrees.
How big is the manual and can I search it?
It is 1050 pages in English, a searchable and printable PDF. Search the text, print the pages you need for the bench, and keep the rest on a laptop in the workshop.
What do I get after purchasing this New Holland E70 manual?
This is a 1050-page searchable PDF (64 MB) ready for immediate download. Works on any device, so pull it up on your phone while you're under the hood. No shipping, no waiting.
Are there any print restrictions on this New Holland E70 manual?
Yes, print as many copies as you want, and there are no restrictions. Many mechanics print the section they need and bring it to the shop floor.
