Part of the New Holland Repair Manuals.
This is the factory service manual for the New Holland L221 and L228 skid steer loaders and the C227 and C232 compact track loaders, all Tier 4B (final) machines. It is one book for both families because they share the engine, the hydrostatic drive, the loader and the electrical architecture, and it splits the ground each machine does not share into its own chapters: wheels for the skid steers, tracks and track suspension for the track loaders. Roughly two thirds of the manual is electrical, most of it harness drawings, connector diagrams and the fault-code tables with the schematic and the guided test behind each code.

New Holland L221, L228, C227, C232 Common Problems This Manual Covers
A fault code and a machine that derates or will not regenerate the particulate filter.
Read the code and open the fault-code section, which pairs each code with its wiring schematic and a guided diagnostic. Codes such as a CAN message timeout from the particulate filter controller look like an engine fault on the dash but are usually a bus or connector problem. Test the CAN bus for shorts and opens using the electronic modules chapter first, then follow the harness drawing to the connector the diagnostic names.
Manual Section: Electrical Systems: Fault Codes and DiagnosticsThe machine is slow, will not track straight, or one side pulls under load.
Work the hydrostatic drive section, which covers the tandem pumps and the drive motors along with the charge circuit and the drive pressure test procedure. Establish which control the machine has first, because the mechanical drive and the Electro-Hydraulic drive fail differently and are diagnosed differently, and the two-speed option adds its own circuit. The section carries the pressure test points, the adjustment procedure and the pump overhaul.
Manual Section: Hydrostatic DriveLoader or auxiliary hydraulics are weak, or a high-flow attachment will not run properly.
Identify the pump assembly before you test. The machine carries either the standard fixed displacement pump or the Enhanced High-Flow (EHF) pump assembly, and the hydraulic section gives a separate schematic frame for each. Once you know which drawing applies, follow it to the control valves and the loader circuit, use the pressure test points the section specifies, and check the auxiliary coupler circuit before you condemn the attachment.
Manual Section: Hydraulic SystemsFrequently Asked Questions
Which machines does this manual cover?
Four: the L221 and L228 wheeled skid steer loaders and the C227 and C232 compact track loaders, all Tier 4B (final). The manual states the serial-number break it applies from for each machine, so check yours before you start: L221 from NEM479941, L228 from NFM401134, C227 from NDM471837 and C232 from NFM402195.
Does it cover both mechanical and electro-hydraulic drive controls?
Yes. The hydrostatic drive section runs from page 163 to page 334 and carries separate coverage for the mechanical drive and the Electro-Hydraulic (EH) drive, plus the two-speed option. The hydraulic section then gives the schematic frame for each build, so you read the drawing that matches the machine in front of you rather than a generic one.
Does it include the fault codes and the wiring?
Yes, and it is the bulk of the book. Harness drawings, connector diagrams and fuse and relay box layouts run from page 756 to page 1200, the electronic modules and CAN bus testing from page 1201 to page 1290, and the fault-code tables from page 1291 to page 2090. Each code carries its wiring schematic and a guided diagnostic, including the diesel particulate filter and CAN message timeout faults.
Are the tracks covered as well as the wheels?
Both, in their own chapters. Wheels and wheel torques for the L221 and L228 sit at pages 579 to 592, and tracks and track suspension for the C227 and C232 at pages 593 to 626, covering the rubber track and undercarriage, the idlers, rollers and sprockets, and the track tension setting and replacement.
How big is the manual and can I search it?
It is 2205 pages in English, a searchable and printable PDF. Search the text, print the pages you need for the bench, and keep the rest on a laptop in the workshop.
How will I receive this New Holland L221, L228, C227, C232 Service Manual?
You get a 2205-page searchable PDF (124 MB) that downloads instantly after checkout. Open it on your laptop, tablet, or phone, and bring it right to the shop floor.
Can I print specific sections of this New Holland L221, L228, C227, C232 manual?
Absolutely. No DRM or copy protection. Print the whole manual or just the pages you need. Any home or office printer works.
