New Holland Bigbaler 330–1290 Common Problems This Manual Covers
New Holland BigBaler 1270 knotter misties after plunger jam, bales come out untied
Clear the chamber and reset the knotter clutch pawl before touching timing. Inspect billhooks and twine discs for wear, then measure knotter gear backlash on page 727; anything outside 0.2-0.4 mm (0.008-0.016 in) means worn gears. Torque the knotter gearbox bolts to 70 N·m and hand-crank a full tie cycle before running under power.
Manual Section: Tying/Wrapping/Twisting p. 727Flywheel shearbolt keeps breaking in heavy crop, PTO drive slips and baler stops feeding
Replace the shearbolt with the correct grade only, torqued to 25 N·m (18.4 lb ft) per page 53; a harder bolt just moves the failure into the gearbox. Check the flywheel gap against the 0.1 mm (0.004 in) minimum on page 45, and back off bale density before restarting. Repeated failures point to worn flywheel bearings, covered.
Manual Section: Power Take-Off (PTO) p. 53Inconsistent bale density, chamber pressure drops off and bales come out soft
Run the stationary density circuit test in the Hydraulic Systems section starting on page 150, then trace pressure loss against the schematic on page 162. Pull the density relief cartridge and inspect for contamination; when reinstalling, torque the cartridge to 25.8-28.5 N·m per page 160. Check cylinder rod seals for external leakage before condemning the valve.
Manual Section: Bale Density Circuit p. 160Pickup won't feed heavy windrows, crop bunches at the rotor and plugs the stuffer
Check pickup height and reel cam timing first; a worn cam drops the tines out of the crop early. Verify realignment dimension X measures 83.5-85.5 mm (3.287-3.366 in) per page 590, and torque the pickup hinge lock nuts to 70-80 N·m, page 577. Clean packed chaff off the rotor scraper before blaming hydraulics.
Manual Section: Pickup p. 577Main gearbox runs hot, whines under full PTO load and smells like burnt oil
Drain the gearbox and inspect the oil for metal flake, then refill to the 9 l capacity listed on page 159. Persistent whine after fresh oil means bearing damage; pull and disassemble the gearbox following the PTO section from page 32, and torque the cover bolts to 180 N·m per page 112 on reassembly.
Manual Section: Gearbox (PTO) p. 159Frequently Asked Questions
What are the torque specifications for the flywheel bolts?
The bolts (S) used to secure the flywheel should be tightened to a torque of 97 N·m (71.5 lb ft). p. 44
What is the procedure for checking the gear backlash in the gearbox?
Install a dial gauge on the gearbox housing and set the probe perpendicular to the teeth of the crown wheel. The gear backlash should be between 0.2 - 0.4 mm (0.00787 - 0.01575 in). p. 103
How do I set the preload for the flywheel?
The flywheel preload is set by installing a shim package (29) calculated using the formula Y - X = Z +0 / 0.05 mm (0.002 in), where Y is the distance measured through the hole of the special washer and X is the thickness of the special washer. p. 45
What is the capacity of the grease lubrication system reservoir?
The grease lubrication system reservoir has a capacity of 2 liters (0.53 US gal). p. 756
What is the maximum allowable wear for a roller chain?
The maximum allowable wear elongation for most industrial applications is approximately 3%. For drives with fixed center distances or where smoother operation is required, wear should be limited to approximately 1.5%. p. 20
