Wrenching on a New Holland MZ14H, MZ16H, or MZ18H Zero Radius Tractor? This 122-page repair manual PDF (OEM #87045363) covers all three models front to back, from the hydrostatic transaxle to the mower deck. Inside: full wiring diagrams for the kill relay, PTO switch, and electric clutch circuits, plus step-by-step transaxle procedures for neutral adjustment, tracking, and complete removal. You also get a full torque section, mower leveling and blade slope adjustments, and drive belt service for the chassis. Fill the transaxle with 1.6 to 1.7 quarts of SAE 20W-50, then torque the side housing screws to 135-185 lb-in. No more chasing electrical gremlins with a test light and a hunch. Bookmarked by system and text-searchable; pull it up on your phone, find the spec, and get back to mowing.

New Holland MZ14H, MZ16H, MZ18H Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland MZ16H hydrostatic drive loses pulling power under load, one wheel drives slower than the other

Check the transaxle oil before tearing anything apart. Level should sit 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) from the top of the fill plug with SAE 20W-50, per the specs on page 10. Purge air from the transaxle after any fluid work, then inspect the drive belt for glazing and the idler for free movement.

Manual Section: Transaxle p. 10
Mower creeps forward or backward in neutral with steering levers centered and parked

Adjust the neutral setting following the transaxle service procedures starting on page 32. Jack the rear wheels off the ground, loosen the control arm screws, rotate the arm until the wheels stop turning, then torque the control arm screws to 230-310 lb-in (26-35 Nm). Recheck at full throttle before dropping it off the jack.

Manual Section: Transaxle Neutral Adjustment p. 32
PTO switch pulled but electric clutch won't engage, blades never start turning

Test the PTO switch for continuity in both positions, then measure clutch coil resistance; a healthy coil reads 2.40 to 3.40 ohms per page 108. Measure current draw next, comparing against the 3.5 amp figure on page 109. If the coil is out of spec, replace the clutch and torque its bolt to 50-60 ft. lbs.

Manual Section: Electric (PTO) Clutch Testing p. 108
Bad deck vibration at full throttle, ragged uneven cut, belt squealing under load

Remove the deck belt and spin each spindle by hand; roughness or side play means bad bearings. Check blades for bends and balance before reinstalling. Set belt guides to 1/32 to 1/8 inch (0.8-3 mm) clearance as shown on page 86, and inspect the belt for cracks at the 100 hour interval page 93 specifies.

Manual Section: Mower Decks p. 86
Engine cranks fine some days, dead the next, or dies when blades engage

Test the seat, park brake, and PTO switches for continuity in every position before condemning the starter or battery. Trace intermittent no-crank circuits with the wiring diagram on page 113, wiggle-testing connectors as you go. Once running, confirm the engine reaches its 3300 RPM maximum governed speed; a starved fuel system will mimic electrical faults.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes a New Holland MZ14H/MZ16H/MZ18H to stop moving or lose pulling power?

Loss of power or failure to move can be caused by low engine speed, bent or out-of-adjustment control linkage, a slipping drive belt, damaged pulleys, low or contaminated oil, excessive loading, a sticking bypass assembly, or air trapped in the hydraulic system. Corrective actions include adjusting settings, repairing or replacing components, filling or changing oil, reducing load, or purging the hydraulic system. p. 29

How do I adjust or reset the deck leveling on a New Holland MZ14H/MZ16H/MZ18H?

To level the mower deck, set the height-of-cut lever to position D (3 inches). Measure the distance from the outside cutting edges to the flat surface; if the difference is not within 3/16 inch (5 mm), remove the hairpin cotter and washer from the leveling bracket and reposition it in a different hole. A front hole lowers the blade height, while a rear hole raises it. p. 82

What are the replacement specifications for the hydrostatic transaxle oil?

The transaxle uses 20W50 engine oil. The required volume for a fluid change is between 54.1 fl.oz. (1600 ml) and 57.5 fl.oz. (1700 ml). p. 30

What is the correct torque for the center section bolts on the transaxle?

The center section mounting screws must be tightened to a torque of 525-700 lb-in (60-80 Nm). p. 54

How often should the unit be greased?

The unit should be greased every 25 hours, or more frequently if it is operated in dusty, dirty, or sandy conditions. p. 22
