Arguments over S3L2 clearances end here: the 312 page New Holland S3L2 service manual PDF, OEM ID 84523916, is the factory document for this three cylinder diesel engine, whatever it happens to power. The fuel injection section takes up nearly a third of the book, running the pump from removal through timing to injector inspection and the shutoff solenoid. Wiring diagrams map the starting circuit, cold start aid, and alternator, so an electrical fault gets chased with the print in front of you instead of from memory. Before teardown, verify compression against the 26 to 29 bar (377 to 421 psi) spec, then measure standard bores against 78.030 to 78.060 mm. Guess a bearing clearance wrong and you pay twice: parts, then a second teardown. Buy this bookmarked, keyword searchable PDF once and it stays yours for the life of the engine.

New Holland S3L2 Common Problems This Manual Covers

New Holland S3L2 cranks but won't start, or starts hard and dies when cold

Check battery condition and cable connections before condemning injectors; slow cranking kills cold starts on this engine. Purge air from the fuel lines and torque the injection pump air bleeding plug to 10 - 14 N·m (page 166). If it still won't fire, run a compression test per page 38; healthy cylinders read 26 - 29 bar at 290 RPM.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting p. 38
Low power under load with black exhaust smoke, worse at full throttle

Replace the air filter first; a plugged element makes black smoke that mimics injector failure. Then pull the injectors and pop test each one; valve opening pressure is 137 bar nominal, 142 - 150 bar standard after adjustment (page 192). Reinstall the nozzles at 49.0 - 58.8 N·m per page 194 and torque the injection pipe nuts to 25 - 34 N·m.

Manual Section: Fuel Injection System Service p. 192
Rough idle with heavy vibration, gray smoke under load, one cylinder sounds dead

Run a compression test; spec is 26 - 29 bar at 290 RPM with less than 3 bar spread between cylinders (page 36). A low hole points at valve sealing or rings; set valve lash per the Valve Drive and Gears section on page 123 before tearing deeper. Pop test the injectors; opening below 137 bar drops that cylinder at idle.

Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting p. 36
Burns oil between changes, blue smoke at startup, heavy blow-by from the crankcase breather

Measure the bores before ordering an overhaul kit. Standard cylinder inside diameter is 78.030 - 78.060 mm and piston to cylinder clearance runs 0.035 - 0.086 mm (page 37); past that, bore for 0.25 mm or 0.50 mm oversize pistons. Check block top distortion against the 0.05 mm limit, then torque the head bolts to 83 - 93 N·m per page 29 on reassembly.

Manual Section: Engine and Crankcase p. 37
Engine runs hot, coolant pushes out the overflow, temperature climbs steadily under load

Drain the system and test the thermostat in a pan of water; the valve should crack open at 76.5 °C (page 243) and reach 8 mm of lift by 90 °C. Reinstall with the cover torqued to 16 - 20 N·m (page 249), refill with 1.8 L of coolant, and set fan belt deflection to 10 - 12 mm under 98 N of thumb pressure (page 253).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the torque specifications for the cylinder head bolts on the New Holland S3L2 engine?

The cylinder head bolts for the S3L2 engine must be torqued to 83 - 93 N·m (61 - 69 lb ft). p. 29

What is the standard valve clearance for the intake and exhaust valves on the S3L2 engine?

The standard valve clearance for both intake and exhaust valves is 0.25 mm (0.010 in) when the engine is cold. p. 125

What is the oil capacity of the S3L2 engine?

The oil capacity of the S3L2 engine is 4.2 liters (1.11 US gal) with the filter, and 3.7 liters (0.98 US gal) without the filter. p. 227

What is the correct belt tension for the alternator belt on the S3L2 engine?

The belt tension should be checked by applying a force of 98 N (22 lb) to the belt between the alternator and crankshaft pulleys. The resulting belt deflection should be approximately 10 - 12 mm (0.39 - 0.47 in). p. 253

What is the fuel injection timing for the S3L2 engine?

The fuel injection timing for the S3L2 engine should be 19° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). p. 186
