Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
What's inside: the Case factory service manual for the 1080 and 1080B crawler excavators, publication 8-42681, 1,593 pages. These machines were built with either a Case engine or a Detroit Diesel In-Line 71, and this one volume carries both: Case engine specifications, removal, installation and service, plus the complete Detroit Diesel Engine Manual for the In-Line 71 - overhaul from cylinder block through pistons, crankshaft, head and blower, then the limiting speed governor, fuel injection, vehicle equipment and engine troubleshooting. That Detroit Diesel book is normally a separate purchase and it is most of this volume. Around it: fuel system, electrical, track and suspension, power train with the swing and travel drives, brakes, the hydraulics (pumps, main control valve, cylinders, swivel and circuit operation) and mounted equipment for boom, arm and bucket. The book closes with its schematic sheets: page 1590 is the full 1080/1080B (Late) electrical schematic with the cab, engine and console harnesses and wire numbers, and page 1592 is the full hydraulic schematic showing the inside and outside main control valves, the hand and foot modulator valves, the hydraulic swivel and both drive motors. This is a scanned book with a searchable text layer added, so you can search it.

Case 1080, 1080B Common Problems This Manual Covers
Detroit Diesel 71 runs rough, smokes, or loses power and you are guessing at injectors versus blower versus governor.
Work the Detroit Diesel Series 71 Troubleshooting section first - its diagnosis charts walk symptoms back to a cause before you pull the valve cover. Then the Governors and Fuel Injection section covers injector timing and the limiting speed governor adjustments.
Manual Section: Detroit Diesel Series 71 - Troubleshooting p. 942Machine will not travel or swings poorly, and you cannot tell if the fault is hydraulic or mechanical.
The Hydraulics section explains circuit operation for every function, so you can isolate pump, main control valve, modulator valve or swivel problems with the schematic in hand, then hand off to Power Train for the drive itself.
Manual Section: HydraulicsThrown track, worn rollers, or a track that will not hold tension.
The Track and Suspension section covers track chain, rollers, idler, track adjuster and recoil spring service, including the safe procedure for relieving recoil spring preload, which is the step that hurts people who skip the book.
Manual Section: Track and SuspensionElectrical gremlins - no crank, dead gauges, or lights out - on a machine whose wiring has been hacked at for decades.
Use the late 1080/1080B electrical schematic together with the Electrical section on batteries, starting, charging and harnesses. The schematic carries wire numbers for every switch and lamp, which turns guesswork into a test-light job.
Manual Section: Schematics - Electrical and Hydraulic SheetsFrequently Asked Questions
My 1080 has the Detroit Diesel 71 in it. Does this manual actually cover that engine, or just the Case engine?
Both. Case bound the complete Detroit Diesel In-Line 71 engine manual into this volume - cylinder block, pistons and rods, crankshaft, cylinder head, blower, lubrication, limiting speed governor, fuel injection, cooling and a full engine troubleshooting section. If your machine has the Case engine instead, its specifications, removal and installation are covered in a separate section. You do not need a second book either way.
Does it include the electrical and hydraulic schematics?
Yes, and they are the real full-machine sheets, not simplified sketches. The late 1080/1080B electrical schematic shows the cab, engine and console harnesses, alternator, starter magnetic switch, and every switch and lamp with wire numbers. The hydraulic schematic traces both main control valves, the hand and foot modulator valves, the swivel, both drive motors, the pilot pump, manifold block, filters and reservoir. These sheets are what you chase a dead circuit or a lazy function with.
Will this help me with track adjuster and recoil spring work?
Yes. The Track and Suspension section covers the track chain, rollers, idler, track adjuster and recoil spring. A word of caution the manual repeats for good reason: the recoil spring is under serious preload, so follow the disassembly procedure exactly rather than backing bolts out and hoping. The section gives you the safe sequence. p. 1151
The swing is weak and the machine tracks crooked. Where do I start?
Start with the Hydraulics section - it explains circuit operation for swing, arm, track, boom and bucket, so you can tell whether the problem is a pump, the main control valve, the modulator valves or the hydraulic swivel before you pull anything apart. From there the Power Train section covers the swing drive, travel drives, final drives and center swivel for the mechanical side. p. 1197
Is this a searchable file or just page photos?
It is a scan of the original factory book with an OCR text layer added on top, so you can search for words and section names. OCR on an old printed page is not perfect, so treat searched-for part numbers as a pointer and confirm them against the page image itself before ordering parts.
