Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
Case published this book under its own number, 9-72095: 443 pages of factory service data for the 1700, 1737 and 1740 Uni-Loader, the Case 1700, 1737, 1740 service manual PDF exactly as the dealer network received it. Hydraulics get a full chapter, from the loader valve through lift and tilt cylinder teardown to the auxiliary cylinders, with schematics you can follow from pump to rod end. Wiring diagrams and troubleshooting charts back the electrical chapters, so a no-start on your 1740 gets traced instead of guessed at. Set main bearing oil clearance between .0012 and .0042 inch, and pull the lift cylinder piston bolt to 200 to 220 ft. lbs. Bookmarks drop you into Power Train, Brakes or Mounted Equipment in seconds, and the text layer finds the rest.

Case 1700, 1737, 1740 Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 1740 Uni-Loader lift arms drift down under load, bucket cylinders sluggish on the return stroke
Check the hydraulic system trouble shooting chart and cylinder tests on pages 259 through 265 for cylinder creep and sluggish lift. Drain and refill the reservoir to its 14 gallon capacity, then pull the lift cylinder and rebuild the packing. Torque the piston bolt to 200 to 220 ft. lbs. and the gland to 100 to 200 ft. lbs. on reassembly.
Manual Section: Hydraulics p. 288Drive chains slap and rattle in the chain case, loader crabs to one side under throttle
Pull the chain case covers and measure sag at the midpoint of each run before you blame the drive motors. Reset idler position, then torque the No. 80 chain sprocket mounting bolts to 40 to 50 ft. lbs. and the wedge bolts to 20 to 25 ft. lbs. per the power train specs on page 307. Replace any chain with stiff links.
Manual Section: Power Train p. 307Clutch slips under load and the adjuster nut is already run out to the end of its threads
Inspect the multiple disc clutch pack for glazing, heat blue, and disc thickness loss before touching the linkage again. Verify the actuating cylinder strokes fully and the return spring is not collapsed. Check the drive belt condition in the power train section starting on page 303, and confirm engine speed holds at 2000 RPM under load on the 1740.
Manual Section: Power Train p. 303Brake pedal feels spongy, goes nearly to the floor, and the machine creeps on a grade
Work the brake troubleshooting chart on page 354 for spongy pedal and excessive travel. Pull each wheel cylinder and inspect the bore and cups for pitting and weeping. Bleed the system until the pedal comes up firm with no air, then measure free travel and reset the linkage. Rebuild both sides together so pull stays even.
Manual Section: Brakes p. 354Engine cranks slow or will not start, battery goes dead overnight after sitting
Run the charging circuit and continuity tests on pages 364 through 369 before you condemn the starter. Clean both battery posts and the frame ground strap down to bright metal. Verify alternator output at rated speed and check for a parasitic draw at the main lead. Confirm oil pressure reads 50 to 70 pounds once the diesel fires on the 1740.
Manual Section: ElectricalEngine loses power under a full bucket, smokes and misses at working speed
Replace the fuel filters and bleed the system following the diesel fuel procedures on pages 186 and 187. Pop test the injectors for spray pattern and seat leakage. If it still falls flat, run a compression check per the engine troubleshooting on pages 42 and 43, and verify crankcase oil sits at the 5 quart fill with the filter changed.

The valve tappet clearance for both the exhaust and intake valves on the 1740 Uni-Loader diesel engine is .014 inch, measured when the engine is hot or cold. p. 3
What is the crankcase oil capacity for the 1737 Uni-Loader with a filter change?
The crankcase oil capacity for the 1737 Uni-Loader is 4 quarts, and it increases to 5 quarts when the oil filter is changed. p. 4
What is the correct oil pressure for the 1740 Uni-Loader diesel engine?
The oil pressure for the 1740 Uni-Loader diesel engine should be between 50 and 70 pounds when the engine is warm and operating at rated engine speed. p. 3
