Part of the Case Repair Manuals.
All 256 pages of this Case 1816 service manual (OEM #9-72555) target a single machine: the 1816 UNI-LOADER, with factory procedures spanning the engine, equipment hydraulics, power train, electrical system, and roll-over protection structure. Inside you get hydraulic schematics for both the Vickers and Sundstrand hydrostatic systems, wiring diagrams for the electrical system, and a full troubleshooting section covering hard-starting engines, hydrostatic pump diagnostics, and relief valve adjustments. The loader control valve, auxiliary control valve, lift/tilt/grapple cylinders, drive chains, and axles each get their own step-by-step rebuild procedures. Torque the wheel nuts to 40-50 foot-pounds and confirm the hydraulic system is filled to its 7-gallon total before you start tracing that pressure fault. Your machine is down and forums won't rebuild a Sundstrand pump. Bookmarked and keyword-searchable; pull up the right section on any device and start wrenching.

Case 1816, 1816 UNI-LOADER Common Problems This Manual Covers
Case 1816 wheel shaft hub bearings worn, excessive side-play or grinding noise at wheels p. 5
Raise the machine and rock each tire side-to-side to check for hub bearing play. Remove the wheel, inspect bearing races and seals for pitting or leakage, and replace any worn components. Reinstall and torque wheel nuts to 40-50 foot-pounds per the spec on page 5. Recheck torque after the first 8 hours of use.
Manual Section: Power TrainHydraulic filter condition indicator stuck on, won't reset after service p. 99
Replace the hydraulic filter and drain the reservoir if oil appears dark or contaminated. Refill to capacity with clean hydraulic fluid; the total system holds 7 gallons. Check technical specifications on page 99 for the correct filter part and fluid type. Run the system under load at operating temperature and verify the indicator resets before returning the machine to service.
Manual Section: Equipment HydraulicsLoader lift arms binding or squeaking at pivot points, stiff movement during operation p. 4
Grease all loader pivot points every 25 hours or weekly, whichever comes first. Check the maintenance schedule on page 4 for all grease locations and intervals. Apply grease until it purges from both sides of each bushing. If the arm stays stiff after greasing, remove the pivot pin and measure bushing clearance before ordering replacement parts.
Manual Section: Mounted EquipmentEngine cranks slowly or won't start, no fire when key is turned
Check battery cable connections for corrosion and test battery voltage; poor connections cause slow cranking even with a charged battery. Verify the fuel shut-off is open and the tank has fuel: capacity is 9 gallons on units prior to S/N 9826660 (8.5 gallons after). If the engine cranks but won't fire, follow the engine troubleshooting procedures.
Manual Section: Engine Troubleshooting (General)All hydraulic functions slow or weak, bucket and boom barely moving under load p. 107
Check hydraulic fluid level and condition; low or contaminated oil causes system-wide sluggishness. Drain and refill if the oil is dark or has a burnt smell; total system capacity is 7 gallons. Trace the circuit layout using the schematic on page 107. If both lift and tilt remain weak after a fresh fill, the equipment pump is the likely fault.
Manual Section: Hydraulic System Troubleshooting (General)Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the lift cylinder stall halfway when extended with a load on a Case 1816?
If the lift cylinder stalls halfway when extended with a load, the possible cause is worn piston packing. To remedy this, check the cylinder packing as instructed under 'Poor Operation of One Circuit Only' on page 4011-9, and remove the cylinder for repair as required.
