Starter won't turn, or the loader valve spools stop returning to neutral and cycle times drag. On a Case 1845B Uni-Loader, you find the cause with a troubleshooting chart, a pressure gauge or a flow test. This service manual covers both the 188 Diesel and the 159 spark ignition engine.

The drive is traced from the hydrostatic piston pump through the motor, sprockets and chains, planetaries and axle housings. Hydraulics get relief pressure checks, flow tests for each circuit, and the loader, auxiliary and backhoe control valves. Wiring diagrams cover the diesel and gasoline machines.

Keep it on a phone or a shop laptop. It goes with you to the bench, the truck or the jobsite where the loader sits.

Case 1845B Common Problems This Manual Covers

One loader circuit is weak or slow while the others work

Run the flow test circuit by circuit and compare each one to Test No. 1 at the same pressure. If a circuit flows less, it has leakage. Check for worn or damaged cylinder packing, a worn spool or spool bore, or a low circuit relief valve setting.

Manual Section: Hydraulics - Hydraulic Troubleshooting and Flow Tests p. 968
Cylinder rod seals leak, spools stick off neutral and the oil runs hot

The manual names contamination as a major cause of hydraulic malfunction. Leaking cylinder rod seals, spools that won't return to neutral, oil running too hot and slow cycle times all trace back to it. Clean the system out with the portable filter before you replace parts.

Manual Section: Hydraulics - Hydraulic Troubleshooting p. 977
Drive chains are loose and the adjustment has run out

Tighten the drive chain by moving the planetary mounting plate in its slots. Tighten the driven chain by moving the axle housing in its slots. When the plate or housing has no travel left, replace that chain. Never shorten a chain to take up slack.

Manual Section: Power Train - Drive Sprockets and Chains p. 784
Starter does not run when the key is turned

Work through the electrical troubleshooting chart in order. Check for discharged batteries, then bad connections or wires in the starting circuit. Then look at engine oil too heavy for cold weather, a worn pinion or flywheel ring gear, loose starter cap screws and the starter solenoid.

Manual Section: Electrical - Electrical Troubleshooting Chart and Starter p. 549

Frequently Asked Questions

What oil goes in the 1845B chain case, and how often should it be changed?

Each chain compartment takes 5 U.S. quarts (4.7 litres) of engine oil, not hydraulic fluid. At 500 hours or once a year, drain the chain compartments and flush them with diesel fuel before refilling. The Power Train section covers the drive sprockets and chains. p. 784

How do I check the loader main relief pressure?

Connect a 0 to 3000 psi gauge, run the engine at full throttle, hold the control lever and read the gauge. The loader main relief should read 2275 to 2375 psi. Equipment pump output is listed at 14.8 U.S. gallons at 2000 psi at 2000 rpm. p. 971

The starter won't turn the engine over. Where do I start?

The electrical troubleshooting chart lists discharged batteries and bad connections or wires in the starting circuit first. After that come wrong engine oil for cold weather, a worn starter pinion or flywheel ring gear, loose starter cap screws and a damaged solenoid. If you jump it, the booster batteries must total 12 volts. p. 549

My gas 1845B backfires through the carburetor and stalls under load. What's wrong?

On the 159 spark ignition engine, backfiring through the carburetor, loss of power or stalling under load means the load mixture setting is too lean. The Fuel System section covers the carburetor along with the diesel injection pump, injectors and filters. p. 542
